The dealer stated that the part was bad upon manufacture. I was lucky in that the axle broke while I was entering a parkway at a slow speed. What could have happened had this part snapped at a higher speed? The dealer is downplaying this as a safety concern. Should I be worried?

Your wheel could have fallen off.

No, the wheel wouldn't have fallen off on your car or any other front wheel drive car. You would have just coasted to a stop and wouldn't have been able to move. Rear wheel drive vehicles with a true axle and differential CAN loose a wheel if the axle breaks or the bearing goes out.

THE AXLE COULD HAVE DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION, THE WHEEL BEARING AND YOU AS WELL.

THE WHEEL WOULD NOT HAVE COME OFF, BUT YOUR STEERING WOULD HAVE BEEN EFFECTED TO SOME DEGREE.

AS FOR NOT BEING A SERIOUS ISSUE, LET IT BREAK WHILE THE DEALERS SERVICE MANAGER IS DRIVING AND THEN ASK HIM AGAIN.

I ASSUME THAT THEY ARE FIXING THIS UNDER WARRANTY, SO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CHECK THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ALIGNMENT AS WELL.

ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PAPERWORK STATES JUST WHAT THEY DID AND REPLACED.

wheel would NOT have fallen off. rookie answer from someone that has no clue.
worst case there would have been ALOT of racket and the vehicle would have coasted to a stop.
just had a caravan break one (first cv i have seen actually break!) and all it did was act like the trans had no gears...i.e. put it in drive and nothing happened.
