Many of you say: How could GOD let Katrina happen? or how could he let massive floods, tornadoes etc happen and kill innocent people, but have you ever thought people for the most part didn't even think of the people in New Orleans before Katrina, or people never though of the People in Sri Lanka, or Indonesia before the Tsunami, most people keep to themselves it is when calamity strikes that people come running to the aid of others.

If there were no calamities how many people would run to the aid of other's?

While God does not cause the evil in this world to happen, He can turn all things to good. So, your point remains, while he didn't cause the bad stuff to happen, he uses those things for the betterment of all.

The purpose, if any, to calamities (as you put it) is not that we run to their aid, but that we all turn to God. If you think Katrina has been helped as well as they should after these last two years, think again. If more people answered the call of God, Katrina would have been healed. The Biblical command is "love one another, as I have loved you," and calamities are often caused by human error which God had nothing to do with in the first place - such as New Orleans levees which caused major flooding and lack of proper evacuation plans.

By asking this question you imply as well that God - or your version of it - is responsible for calamities in the world. Why would God send his son to die for an already condemned world as a sign of love and at the same time cause devastation in the same depraved world also as a sign of love? how about humans taking responsibility for their actions?
If people didn't give a rat's a-- about New Orleans, Indonesia or anywhere else before catastrophy strikes them, its cause they didn't want to look into something outside their own little world. fyi there are still people who don't care about New Orleans even after Katrina, so let's get real -- feeling sorry for people and not helping them don't mean squat, especially for christians who think they know what "God's love" is all about.

It is wonderful to see that there are people who are willing to reach out to others in times of disasters.

As for disasters and calamities being Gods way to show us how to love one another. Does he ?

He gives us the answer himself. "When under trial, let no one say: "I am being tried by God." For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone ." (James 1:13)

However, he does allow sad and bad things to happen, but there's a major difference between allowing and causing.

There is a good reason to why he allows these things to happen and why he hasn't put a stop to it, and it has to do with what happened in the garden of Eden.

Soon, however, he will put an end to all evil and will cause this earth to become what he from the beginning purposed. (Psalms 37:9,11,29;Rev 21:3,4;Acts 14:15)

The Creator has a complete rights on His creation that what to do or not. Since we the Human did not understand the almighty of God ( the Creator), we adore and have to accept the calamity which comes upon us. It does not mean that God did not love us or we should't love Him either. Always keep reminding us that the Nature or God Himself is ever greater and must honour Him. In sight of God the sinners must be punished, no matter what the innocent get involved.
Every begining and ending of everything has a new begining. It's recycle matter.

In matter of Human's love one another must be distilled, purified and no means of retention. Then the God lives on every living and non-living things.

When God created us, He did not intend for us to live a life like this. Right now His focus is on spreading the good news of His Kingdom before the end comes. In the book of Job, the Bible states very clear that most of this "natural disasters" are caused by our invisible enemy. That is why the Bible urges us to persevere. When everything is made new again, we will all love each other the way it was meant to be.

I agree with you sister. Alot of the time I think the Lord allows this to happen so that more people would be drawn to Christ. It gives the genuine Christian a chance to go and show others Jesus' love for them and to bring them to the Lord. There has been several disasters that missionaries went and spread their love to the people, and many came to Christ through that situation.
Unfortunately when things are doing great not many people seem to really reach out to the Lord, so the Lord allows it to happen all for His glory. Also, it may be the Lord allowing punishment to happen because of idol worship.....plenty disasters happened in the old testament when idols were being worshipped.
What the enemy meant for evil, our Lord turns it to good.
I believe the Lord is ultimately in control, was it the Lord that commands it to happen? I don't think so, but it must be the devil that suggests it to God and if that place is committing idolatry then the Lord may allow it to happen. He See's the bigger picture and would rather a person go through a disaster then suffer in hell for eternity. I believe the Lord's chosen will not perish, that His children will be brought to Him by the believers that helped out in those disasters.
Also....as a child sometimes needs to get punished for doing wrong, we also need to be punished at times for doing wrong, so that we will get right with the Lord.

you are so right. Without calamities, people would be all self-serving. Have you known many people who seek out others if everything is going well in their lives? If this were the case, I dont think we would suffer calamities. unless God tells me differently, this is what I believe.

Calamities also make us realize we need the hand of God to steer us through life. The people who have Jesus as their personal savior get along a lot better than those who do not believe.

sometimes God allows things to happen NOT to draw us to one another, but to get us to turn to HIM.
our experience on earth is about what glorifies God, not each other.
be warned, there is a war coming soon (possibly before pres. bush is out of office ... 12-18 months).
this war (the 6th trumpet) will kill 2 billion people.
please be ready .... make sure you are saved according to the "apostles doctrine" (acts 2:38) & according to what Jesus said in john 3.
too many people think that believing is enough.
not according to Jesus.
too many people think that baptism of water is enough.
not according to Jesus.
you must also have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, like Jesus spoke of in John 3.
otherwise, Jesus said you CANNOT enter heaven.
this is not fear mongering... scripture tells us to be ready so that day doesn't come to you as a thief in the night. it will only come as a thief to those who are not ready.

So let me get this strait. I have 4 boys and if I really want them to get along and love one another, I should start beating them and maybe kill one of them so that the others can see that it is important to love one another.

That might work for the remaining 3, but my actions weren't loving towards the dead child at all. In fact, my actions wouldn't have been loving in the least, and anyone who wrote a book about me, claiming I was a Loving Father would have been lying.

Doesn't work. If God is in control of all things then he isn't loving, period. Especially when you throw in the fact that he decided that eternal torture was a just punishment for disbelief.
