I posted this query Friday and today found that the question AND all accompanying answers had been DELETED!, and I was issued a Violation Notice to boot!!! And NO, there were none of My usual sexual innuendos present; ONLY the simple QUESTION. Those of you who know Me already know that I JUST DON'T QUIT!!! I want to know EVERYTHING I can, because Knowledge IS Power, and I am not afraid to admit My few intellectual shortcomings if I encounter them.
So, WHO can tell Me:

WHAT IS an "Anchor Baby", precisely???

An 'Anchor Baby' is a child born in America to illegal immigrant parents. Since the baby is a citizen, the parents can use it as leverage to avoid deportation, or at least make a big dramatic story out of thier deportation 'breaking up thier family' (even though they could just take the kid with them). Once an 'Anchor Baby' grows up, it can sponsor it's parents to become legal, using the family-preferences that have been part of immigration law since the mid 60s.

The implication is that 'Anchor Babies' are concieved with the express purpose of using them to finesse American immigration law, and that can be offensive, since most people don't stoop to /having/ children just to cheat a system.

according to a misinterpretation of the fourteenth amendment to the u.s. constitution which states that any person born on u.s. soil is a citizen, the illegals coming in from mexico and elsewhere go to u.s. hospitals to have their babies. envision the pregnant illegals on the mexican side of the border throwing an anchor onto the u.s. side of the border and pulling themselves over and you pretty much have the picture of an 'anchor baby'...and just so you know, the original intent of the fourteenth amendment was to protect recently freed slaves...not future illegals...

Apparently they're kids born to illegal immigrants inside the country they immigrated to so they can stay there. Unfortunately, in the U.S., they've caught on to this and the illegals can still be deported even if they have kids that were born here.
