you need to use atf+4. it is not nearly the same as p/s fluid. if the system was designed for atf+4, the seals in the rack and the pump will not last with p/s fluid. the +4 also help with foaming, noise, shudder, and cold weather performance.

RE:
What kind of Power Steering Fluid should I use?
What kind/type of power steering fluid should I use for a 2003 Dodge Neon? The owners manual says transmission fluid. But that doesn't make sense to me. Im not a car person so it could be correct. I just wanted to see if that was right or if there were any other suggestions/answers.

For a 2003 model, if it says use ATF, use ATF+4 which is formulated especially for Chrysler vehicles.
For everybody that answered ATF and power steering fluid is the same, you are wrong. Buy a pint bottle labeled power steering fluid. It will be clear, not red. If you see something leaking under the car, you can tell by the color what it is. Brownish color or black, motor oil. Red, ATF. Clear, power steering fluid.

Mercon V ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid, available anywhere. (ATF) And yes it does get used in some power steering systems.

You should use ATF(automatic transmission fluid), also used as power steering fluid in most american vehicles. Be sure not to overfill reservoir.

yep, use of ATF has been the norm for years ... probably since they started putting power steering in cars... you can also buy "power steering fluid" at your local auto parts store, but it's really only ATF without the red color dye added to it. the red dye was added to ATF years ago so you could tell what kind of leak you found under your car (different color from water, antifreeze, oil, etc.)...
and if the manual says use ATF, it's a lot cheaper to buy a no name brand ATF than a name brand "power steering fluid" and it's the same thing (minus the color)...

Yes, the owners manual is correct. There hasn't been any difference in transmission fluid and power steering fluid for years!
They just label it different at the store, same stuff in both bottles! (Hydraulic fluid)
