Anything over 2 mega pixels should cover your needs. Unless you're planning to do a lot of zooming or enlargement of photographs, there is no need to spend a lot of money to get the largest number of pixels. The human eye simply does not see much of a difference once the image reaches 2 mega pixels.

With that said, I highly recommend Canons. The images are crisp and beautiful.

The average is now between 6 and 8 megapixels but this should not be your only consideration.
You should also consider the optical zoom and digital zoom, the higher the optical zoom (the camera does the zoom) whereas a camera with higher digital zoom (software in the camera recreates the zoom) may not provide better quality closeups, so it depends on what you want.
Be sure if you are an amateur that you get a camera that has image stabilization this limits the camera shake that causes distorted pictures. In some cases you may also want to have a camera that once you are experienced, it can be used in manual mode which means you can adjust the settings to create some amazing effects.

I would say that you won't want a camera less than 7 mega pixels and the higher your budget can afford the better but check out the reviews on whatever camera you are looking at,as these can provide some insight into how the camera has performed in comparison to others.

I presently own a fujifilm S5200 6.1 mp and a panasonic dmc-lc70 3.0mp. I can also say that each of these cameras has produced award winning nature photographs.
Each of these cameras was rated highly at the time of purchase, now it appears that other major brands have started to catch up.

How long is a piece of rope? 8^)

How many megapixels you need depends on what you want to do. Do you plan to print -big- pictures? 8x10? Bigger?

The thing is, megapixels get cheaper as time goes by. Most cameras today, even in the moderate price range, have at least 5 megapixels, and that's plenty for most things. You can do 8x10 blowups just fine.

If you plan on smaller pictures, say 4x5, then 3 megapixels is fine. If you only want to look at them on the computer screen, 1 megapixel is enough!

Of course more is better assuming all other things are equal. (But they seldom are!)

If you are looking at a few cameras and deciding which to get, look them up on dpreview.com. They have test photos there shot with nearly every camera ever made. You can download the actual photos and zoom in on them and see how sharp and clear they are. Even among cameras with the same number of megapixels, some seem much better than others!

At least 2 Megapixels. The difference would be whether or not you want the photos blown up. if you have a favorite photo and want to go 8 by 10. then you want more mega pixels. if you are putting them in an album or keeping them on your computer, 2 MP should be fine.

If you are strictly hobbying photography, 8 Megapixels is quite enough to cover you. At that size, you can crop pretty heavily and still have a very nice picture to get an 8x10 from.

Professional cameras go up to 12-14 Megapixels due to the huge enlargements Magazines and billboards take photos up to.

It depends on what you're going to do with the pictures. If you're just going to put them on the internet, one megapixel would be plenty. If you're going to print them out poster size, you might want to go for 12 megapixel. The other posters are all right. By the way, I've printed out my 6 megapixel images at 4" x 6" and it looks exactly the same as 35mm film.

4 to 6 megapixels is sufficient for most users. If you plan to do plenty of cropping or enlarge many photos by more than 8X10, only then will you need more. More megapixels by themselves won't guarantee you a better image.

Go with 3. There's no point in getting more becuase your not likely to tell a difference. It's all about the money anyway. The more they have, the more they can charge you.

depends on what you want to do with the pictures and how serious you about the quality of your photography.

Recommend at least 4-8 mp. I have 12.1, but I do a lot of "tweaking" on my computer to isolate interesting vignettes.

have fun
