a smile and a wave. this tends to get the best of people who are angry enough to say things like that to their fellow human beings. just let it roll right off your back, like you haven't a care in the world and this will do two things for you. firstly it will show that person you don't care what they say to you or about you and two it will probably discourage them from repeating that behaviour with you in the future.

The best answer would be non-verbally, but that would depend on the situation, the person, and your own personality.
The best answer I ever came across was when a friend of mine
was pestered in India by a group of begging children.
He lost his cool and told one of them to F.... Off.
The little kid immediately came back with :
You F... off , this MY country!!.
Steve just doubled up laughing.
On the beach I once heard a " Go play with the sharks " as a reply which I considered pretty imaginative.

Obviously the person doesn't want to engage in social intercourse, either verbal or physical, so the best reply is no reply. It will only get you a barrage of abuse.
Or you could say, "Well, have a nice day to you, too!"

I don't know the facts and circs here, but I'll try:
Sometimes the smartest thing to do is say nothing and just go away. Sometimes the most mature response is no response. People can say things in anger but just because they lose control doesn't mean you have to.

The best response is no response. Hard as it may be to keep your mouth closed, it will irritate the person more. They are looking for a payoff and your angry response is the payoff that gets them off.
Just smile and walk away. They will be really steamed you didn't argue with them.

Laugh at them, point to their hair or something or a spot on their face and walk away. That'll get them thinking.
