My dad grew up eating C-ration canned bread in the mid-60s. My grandmother use to buy them at Sunbeam bakery. I'm hoping to get a description of the taste and texture so i can try to recreate it for him. All I can get out of my dad is that it was dense bread that was delicious. Thanks for any help. (P.S. they no longer make this bread, the tins you buy on ebay is vintage bread, I'm wanting edible bread) :)

At the moment I am trying to contact Sunbeam's mother company. For those who remember the bread, could you describe it to me, please? (sweet, dry, flavorless, buttery, yeasty, eggy, etc) Thanks for all your answers.

I ate that bread a long time ago, when I was in the service. Some people liked it, others hated it. I've even heard, it was related to the hockey puck family. : )

Seriously though, the bread was fairly dense and weighty for it's size. The texture (denseness) is like a slightly compressed pound cake.

The taste was a little on the sweet side, if you've eaten that Hawaiian Bread, it's kind of like that, but half as sweet.

If I remember correctly, there really wasn't a buttery flavor, but more of an oily flavor after taste (not a bad flavor at all).

There most defiantly wasn't any yeasty or eggy flavors to this bread. There really weren't the normal air holes in it, that a yeast type bread would have, it looked more like how a biscuit would look (dense?).

You have to keep in mind that the bread is meant for battlefield conditions, where high calories are needed. So this bread will have a lot of sugars and oil in it, to meet the high calorie demands.

I hope this helps you out, good luck with the quest!

I don't remember bread in c-rats.
I do remember a bisquit that was in the cans. It was like a thick version of those Marie's cookies you can buy in the store.

In regards to bread in a can, I belive B&M still makes a brown bread that's in a can. I personally thought it was pretty bad.

I'm trying to get a hold of my husband, he ate C-rations when in Grenada. I believe he's said the food isn't great, but not bad either. Get back to me later if you want and I'll ask him. He'll know.
