Im a teacher and one of my students is a 5-year-old girl, and i think with autism...She is not responding to her name, no eye contact, she does not play with other children, she seems to be living in her own lonely world walking around the classroom all day uttering only few words from time to time to herself. I dont know how to treat her , should i be firm and treat her like any other kid ;no means NO or with special treatment because she is really not responding to me; she leaves classroom without permission etc...

I am surprised you are asking this question. I am a licensed counselor and I had to have childhood development even though it was not my field. I am sure you would have to have had early intervention classes as well as childhood development, also you would have had to pass your state test to be accredited and things like this are all over that test! If you truly do not know, speak with your superiors and get this child help. If she is autistic, how you teach her will be really different from how you teach children who are not autistic. Please get this child some help, and take a few classes on how to handle special children.

Talk to your principal. Most schools have teachers who deal with special ed and kids with developmental delays. They will have to set up an ARD meeting with you , the child's parents and the principal and a diagnostician. I'm surprise you don't know to talk to someone in your school's administration about what steps to take. If the child is as severe as you describe she probably wouldn't be in a regular classroom, or would have her own tracking aid.

It's time to call a meeting with someone who can help. I would recommend to the parents to have her evaluated. She may need a special needs aide. If she truly has autism, it would be cruel to try to make her do as the others because she might not be at their level of understanding.

You should refer this child immediately to a specialist at your school for evaluation! You should further alert the parents to where she should be, and she's not, developmentally. They may be ignorant of what other children of this age are doing and acting like. You need to be the one to get this child help and do it NOW.
