The Ethiopian Church comes from the Church of Alexandria in Egypt. It is thought that St. Mark founded the church of Alexandria. From there -- don't quote me -- I think it was St. Frumentius who brought the Good news to Ethiopia and what is now Eritrea. The Alexandrian Orthodox Church is very strict.....they belong to a group of six major Orthodox Churches known collectively as the Orthodox Church of the East. while they are in communion with each other, they are not in communion with other Orthodox churches.

Of course, Alexandria/Ethiopia did not start as Orthodox.....they left the Church of Rome with the great schism of Monophysitism which maintains that Jesus had only one nature -- the divine one -- and not two as in human and divine.

Today’s head of the Coptic (Greek for Egypt) Orthodox Church is Pope Shenouda III.

FYI....there is also an Ethiopian Catholic church as well...it is in communion with Rome.
