First off we need to know what you are trying to send an email with. What is your email client? Yahoo!, Hotmail, gmail, outlook? Or are you trying to use winZip's option to compress and email option. If so, I would not use winZips feature, also get winRar. winZips evaluation does not let you do anything.
So I will walk you through this pretending you use Hotmail, okay? Find your folder and compress it to your Desktop. Now open up an internet browser and go to www.hotmail.com and log in. Now in the upper left corner click the new button. Type in who you want to email this to, and the subject along with the message. Now on the top menu there is a button that says attach. Click that and then click attach file, not attach photo. Browse your Desktop for the the YOUR_FOLDER.zip. To finish up click send and then log out.
The same should go for any other email client you use, just change the website, where the buttons are located, etc..
--EDIT
Sorry, did not notice you had winRar. Yeah also like they said, upload it to a file server and then email the link. I use a custom email, and my uncle owns the server so I really do not have an upload limit. Hotmail, Yahoo! and all those do though.

Haven't used WinRAR often enough to know all the options but why would you try to email a 400 MB file? Most email systems tend to limit you to about 2 MB for an attachment. Have you considered using one of the file sharing websites like RapidShare and sending a link to your friend?

Compressing a file using WinRaR does not always mean it can be sent by mail, mostly when it exceeds usually 2MB or a maximum of 10MB in most cases. If the file is already a in a compressed format (e.g MP3), it can't be compressed further. Some file extensions are already compressed by default. What so you need to send my mail of 400MB? Can i help you?

When you go to compress the file in Winrar choose the option to create 4 split files instead of just one. Then go to Rapidshare.com and upload each one and copy the download link for each and e-mail that to whoever you are sending the file to and there you go.

I think gmail has a higher limit, but you have to get someone to invite you. You could try zipping it, but you probably won't get it down to 10 MB. I don't know of many other good free ways to do this. You could break up the file, but the recipients would have to recombine it. You could try to lower its quality. If you only wanted to transmit it to a single person there are other options rather then email.

Winrar is not an email program, if you really have to email,
your going to have to break into many, many, many smaller
chunks to send.
Better to upload to megaupload, then send the link to someone and let them download themselves.
Better yet burn to CD, or DVD, and send USPS.

You can compress the file into smaller parts but to email it, you would need a LOT of parts! Not worth it.

Go to http://www.Pando.com and download Pando. That will allow you to send files and/or folders up to 1 gigabyte. They are uploaded to the Pando server and then the recipient downloads them. You can also put a widget on a website to allow users to download a pando package from the server with a click - good for saving space!

WinRAR is for compressing files only, you can't email using WinRAR.
You can use one of these sites to email your file:
http://www.yousendit.com/
http://www.uploading.com/
http://www.megaupload.com/
http://www.uploadhut.com/
And more
http://www.google.com.qa/search?q=upload+files&hl=en&start=20&sa=N
Hope this helps & good luck,
