and it wouldn't go back in...so we had to buy another one at Wal-Mart because we thought it was broken...I don't know what happened, he barely dropped the camera on the dirt so does anyone know what the problem could be?

probably some particle of the sand got into the lens - you could check to a service center on how much would it cost to fix it but I'm not sure it would be cheaper than buying a new one.

most likely sand got into the mechanism...they are pretty delicate and one grain of sand can jam a gear...other possibility is that the lens got out of alignment by jumping a cog in the gear and now isn't straight so it won't move.

One more reason why your camera should be secured around your neck with a good strap when its not in your camera bag.

Enjoy your new camera. Your old one is now a paperweight.
