It could be just that hes so little and drinks a little bit to much and he kind of chokes just like babies.

This is common in puppies and smaller breeds. I have a very small dog that is almost 2 and he still coughs and snorts all the time when he drinks water. My vet said it is normal, they are just excited and full of energy. They try to drink too fast and it goes down the wrong tube but it's harmless.

Does your puppy cough only when he drinks or sometimes does he just cough in general? It is very common for puppies to come home with what is known as kennel cough. It sounds deep and horse. If this is the case in either way bring him to the vet. Kennel cough, if left un treated can lead to phenumonia. Most puppy breeders and stores allow one free vet visit within the first 60 days of perchase.

Your pup has a drinking problem just like a lot of people :).
I have a four year old Beagle that drinks so fast he ends up hacking and coughing. He has done since he was a puppy. If she is otherwise OK then I wouldn't worry.

Maybe she's just drinking it too fast, or the water is a little too cold. Water makes me cough sometimes.

My westie (currently 1 yr old) still does that when the water gets into his nose when he drinks. The water might also be too cold.

She could have a soar throat...yes this does happen to dogs. She could be drinking too fast and it going to the wrong place. She could have a trachea problem. I would talk to her vet about this. No one will be able to answer this but a vet who can see your dog for an exam.

watch the way your dog drinks. does she just lap at the water, or does she shove her whole snout in? my dog has a tendancy to do that, and she comes up gasping and spitting and dripping.
