My father has "stage IV" pancreatic cancer. The doctor's gave him 6 weeks to live. Today I was noticing that he will stare at an object and he will not look at someone unless we begin to speak to him. And..I noticed him reaching out with one arm but no one was near him. I was watching from my chair. Also I noticed that his arms and legs will suddently "jerk" or "jump" similar to a person dreaming that they are falling and you suddenly jump in your sleep. He is speaking but we can't understand some of his words. Are all of these signs meaning something? Does this mean he is having visions of someone that had previously died? Or is he trying to tell us something?

I have written you before about watching my loved ones pass, I seen this behavior with my Grandfather more so than my Father or Grandmother, it could be many things, meds, his way of trying to tell the family something or possibly talking to the Almighty. I myself do not know, but I do know this, my prayers are with you and your family. God bless.......

It's a tough question because you can view it from many different views.
1. He is in a unconscious state, like sleeping but still partially awake and moving like we do when we are in that state.
2. Someone who has previously died could be trying to communicate with him.
3. Starring at an object and noticing anyone else he could be contemplating many different things that he has done in life both good and bad, he could be in deep thought.

I don't know but that is my guess. I'm sorry you have to go through this.

This question has probably more to do with the dying process than it does the cancer. There are some websites that you might find useful as you help your Dad go through this journey.

Home Care Guide for Advanced Cancer:A dying persons guide to dying
http://www.acponline.org/public/h_care/dying-gd.htm

Medline Plus: End of Life Issues
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/endoflifeissues.html

Some of the sites can provide you information on what to expect during this stage of the cancer and as his body prepares to shut down.

Stay strong.

the doctors are probably giving him morphine for the pain, and sometimes that makes people a little spacey.
When people come to the end of their time, they do see people from the other side, sometimes they even start talking to them.
When my grandfather died, a few days before his death he stopped eating completely. He also started rattling when he would breathe. He seemed totally unaware of reality at times.
I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.

Ciao, la mia amica...I feel for you . When my grandmother was dieing, she did the same thing. She kept talking to my grandfather(who already died 6 years past), she kept talking to him in Italian. I am a nurse but sometimes I believe that there is something there besides what we can explain..My heart is with you my friend, just be there for him..he will find peace and so will you..There is something out there stronger than us..he will be ok , no matter what. My prayers are with you and your family..E-mail me if you need to talk..Love to you..

I would always get a second opinion. Cancer specialist often have a different outlook on treatments and cures! ! !

If it is not too late have him visit a dedicated Cancer Doctor.

As for the body movements have you asked him if he has been dreaming about something?

I am sorry for your fathers health, I wish your family the best as they deal with your father and his cancer.

*sigh* Whatever is happening now, is beyond us. Sometimes it maybe science, but I'm sure he'll be seeing angels, or something holy along his way, you seem like a good child, so don't worry. You and him will get through this.
