In California preschools three year olds are encouraged to:
-identify all shapes, colors, letters, and numbers (1-10 they will soon learn to 20)
-practice fine motor skills daily such as coloring and cutting ( simple projects with your help)
-name recognition ( constantly show them their name written out)
Some things you might want to work on with him:
-if not potty trained ( some preschools require they are potty trained by a certain age)
-attention skills -being able to sit and listen to books etc.
-create a scheduled nap time while weaning off anything needed to fall asleep ( most preschools do not allow three year olds to have pacifiers, bottles etc. for health reasons, also 3 year olds are required to take a nap at preschools, usual time is between 12-2pm)
Hope this helps

it really depends on the advancement of the school itself, but i would say from previous experience, abc's, 123's,colors, shapes, able to dress themselves, know their full name and birthday, some schools even require them to know their phone number. how old is the child, i know where i live, when my kids started kindergarden, during the summer, before school started, they were all tested to see where they were at in certain skills, they needed to know all of the above plus their address, tie shoes, just things like that. i do think though, that in my area, the schools are in so much competition with each other, to get the highest score in the state that they push the kids way beyond what they really should be learning, and a lot of kids that may be slower, end up being held back, because they are expected to know way too much way too early. i don't see the point in this, they should be more focused on the kids instead of their scores. when my son was 6, in 1st grade, they were teaching him what his cerebrum and cerebellum were. that is middle school teachings. i told my sister that i knew what these things were, but i knew many adults who didn't even know what they were. and she and my mom both said that they honestly had no idea what they were. i had a conference with the teacher and complained on the matter, that things were way too advanced for 6 yr. olds, and she argued with me and said that it was just right. when i was 6, i remember just practicing writing words, my name, small addition and subtraction, things like that, so things have changed. you may want to check with the school that your child will be attending and ask what the requirements will be, so you can start working with your child now. good luck.

Well i am an intern at a preschool right now and what we are teaching them is to learn how to write their names, the alphabet, pets, community helpers, lets see colors, etc. We also have centers time and then we just let them go to different centers and play. Like we have dress up, science center, and a center where they just draw. So i hope that this helps answer your question.

Well in my school they decided to only teach the kids in pre-k the upper case letters, they say its easier to learn thier alphabet that way(well to write them),they are doing more hands on projects instead of paperwork.

My daughter is three and she goes to preschool. They teach them how to paint ,they teach them their ABCs and how to count. I wouldn't worry too much about it though, its not like he is going to kindergarten. My daughter was in it last year too and they are teaching her the same things as last year. Although I am not quite sure, every school is different. good luck.

help him identify the colors..shapes..so he can call them by name.
ABCs..numbers..teach him about nature (bugs, plants)
if he's hyper, maybe work on him being able to sit still by reading to him.
kids at preschool have circle time, and they are read to then.
point out at the words as you read, its never too early to show him how to read easy word or at least identify them.
Im not sure if he's too old for it, but you could get him some Baby Einstein videos.
