We got a letter with our childrens I.D. and password for a school generated page with the homework to be completed online from home.I realize that costs have gone down, but it's still pretty expensive for some people. We are on a military istallation and lower ranked soldiers will certainly have a hard time with the extra expense required.I think if the school provided laptops and the parents paid a monthly fee, I would be more on board.I still feel that the computer work should be completed in labs at the school.

I would assume that my colleagues would either provide access to computers during school hours for the children who don't have computers at home, or they would provide alternative assignments. I've never personally required a child to use a computer to do homework, but I HAVE given big projects that require using computers. I allowed the children to use school computers as well as adult assistance on the projects. Technology is actually a part of the curriculum that must be taught in elementary schools, so it's important that opportunities be provided for students to make use of technology. I could be wrong about your specific situation, but I'm assuming that provisions have already been made to accommodate those who don't have computers. Chances are that may have even been explained to your child in class, but they may not have remembered hearing it.

We struggled with too. When the kids were in elementary school, we did not want them to use our only computer for fear they might catch a virus or something.

We resisted for a while requiring them to send home paper home work and refusing to let the kids log on to Internet sites that required any information.

However it put you children at a disadvantage and aggravates the teacher.

Now that they are older computer use is mandatory and we a separate one for them. They argue that if you do not have one you can use the ones at school or at the library.

There are lots of advantages to using computers. However the big minus seems to be an inability to do real research. Our kids google what ever they need information on with little regard to the source.

Anyway as far as I know its not a law but the latest curriculum's seem to be set up to mandate computer Internet use.

Usually desktop computers are placed on larger computer desks and that might be part of the problem. But you should wait until college, when laptops are a necessity and become more crucial. that way you will be able to get the latest technology at a time when you need it most. and no I have never heard of colleges requiring a particular type of computer except perhaps for certain majors, such as business or computer science or certain types of engineering. wait until college definitely, though. it's more important then.

I agree with you in part, computer access shouldn't be required, both due to monetary issues, and the risk that students will develop bad homework habits. However, that being said, education is preparing them for adulthood and gainful employment, right? There are computers in every walk of life now, early exposure will make it easier for them to learn the proper techniques needed when working with computers.
Many classrooms do not have the time to allow the students to practise their learned skills, and hope they can practice at home. Many households who do not have a computer will know of a friend, relative, or library that does. As long as the parent is stressing the need to use tools other than the computer, and the risks of plageurism and the validity of facts on websites, using one at home shouldn't be too destructive.

This is the information age...and computers are a necessary part of it. Kids are on computers at school quite often, and while my kids school hasn't REQUIRED it, we have certainly used many internet sources for projects and things. Public libraries almost always have internet access that is free to the public, so even if it's not available at home it would be there.

No need to freak out! Im a highschooler and have been doing homework on the computer since elementary school too. It's totally normal now. The computer and internet offer so much more than textbooks can. You dont have to get a computer. Your childs school library has comuters. as well as a librarian if she/he needs help using the computer. Also, your local public library has computers

If anyone asks you, you could always refer them to the local library, which undoubtedly offers free computer and internet access, or the school's own computer labs. And I would disagree with you, P.C.'s can be very cheap nowadays, and surely some monetary aid could be worked out with the school if the need arose.

I agree that there are lots of kids who don't have access to computers. We just assume that everyone has at least as much stuff as we do, but there are lots of kids who don't have things that we sometimes take for granted. On the plus side, you can usually get access to a computer at your local public library.

any one can get a computer now. some costs as low as $100 and some even lower than that. not all of them cost $1000+ (new mac's do, but kids don't need those). and you can a used mac for less than $300 now. I do not agree with you at all. if you don't have a computer in todays world then you cannot learn what you need to.

It is yet another way that the quality of our education is being degraded. Computer education is good, but computers REPLACING education is missing the point.

Good teachers cannot really be replaced with machines, but this is an attempt to do just that
