Who does the best installation-
Depends on who they send out to do the installation. These are both two large commercial chains that are likely to have high turn-over rates of employees; so there is no way to be sure who you are going to get. Check your area for residential low-voltage integrators- these are professionals regularly in the business of doing installations.

As for installing a flat panel over a fireplace, it may not be physically possible, depending on the construction of the fireplace, and if it is, you may not want to do it- LCD Panels put off an enormous amount of heat, placing one over a fireplace may cause it to overheat, or has a strong potential of shortening the lifespan of the panel.

The 'best affordable brand' really has way a lot of factors.
What do you consider affordable? What size? Do you want HD?

Look for these qualities:

What is the Native Resolution of the Screen?

There are only two native resolutions that are HD:
1,920x1,080 and 1,280x720.
if the native resolution is not either of the above, the screen is scaling the image and it is not truly HD.
Be weary of screens that say 'HD ready'- this means they are not HD.

What is the Refresh Rate?

A lower refresh rate is better- it reduces 'flickering' and eye strain, and is capable of reproducing fast video, such as action scenes in movies or sports much more aptly.

Contrast Ratio.

This specification is meaningless. There is no standard by which it is measured, so a screen with a 500:1 contrast ratio may very well be better than a screen with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. If a salesman attempts to sell you a panel citing the contrast ratio, run! They are SELLING you and not Educating you.

Also, remember that if one screen looks better than another in the showroom, it may very well be because the screens are not calibrated; if one screen appears more green or red, the color values are likely not adjusted properly- which brings me to a final point-

If you pay for installation, be sure that they calibrate the screen and dress (neatly tie-back and tuck away) the cables.

Samsung pioneered LCD technology, and for a long time, they manufactured all of the panels that went into everyone elses TV's.

Unless you are looking for something 40" or above, a 720p Samsung LCD panel would be a good place to start looking; if you're looking for 40" or above, a 1080p Samsung would be a good starting point.

Just remember not to trust a salesperson; they are there to Sell you. Do your research- ask around before you make a purchase. If the salesperson comes across like a used car salesman, like they are trying to make you feel stupid, Run!
If you visit enough places and make sure not to purchase from anyone the first time you are there, you will likely end up with a better TV.

Hi, buy an Olevia tv and the mounting bracket and you and a helper can hang it yourself. I am interested in knowing how you are getting power and what are you going to do with all the wires? As far as affordable I looked at them all and ended up buying a Olevia 42"LCD HDTV and i am here to tell you what a fantastic tv this is for under $1000. It has a incredible picture and great sound. I paired it up with a Oppo 970 HD DVD Player and I will tell you watching a dvd on this tv you would swear you were at the movies. Go check it out at Target or www.olevia.com. I have no experience with circut city or best buy's installation sorry. I hung mine with a friend with no problem. I hope this helps. mstrplmber

You should seriously reconsider a fireplace installation for two reasons.

1 - Heat. All electronics do not like heat as this shortens the lifespan. If you look at any instruction manual you will see that there is a warning to keep away from all heat generating sources.

2 - Viewing angle. Unless you plan on sitting very far away from you set, the viewing angle will be quite severe and you will have to sit with your head tilted upward. You will probably find this position to be quite uncomfortable after a while.

To me optimum of those specifications are ineffective.
