believed that technology would turn against us and the world would end. The Santorini have a similar view only they believe only the "wicked" will perish. Looking at the current state of our world - not just man made issues but also the apparent increase in natural disasters, the disappearance of so many species of frog and the situation with the bees what are your thoughts on this?

It was the Mayans who had a far more advanced astronomical system, more advanced than ours in many ways. Their long count calender ends on 12/21/2012, the Aztecs didn't calculate the need to add an extra day at a certain point(long explanation).

The Mayans did not predict the end of the world, the end of the 4th cycle actually ended somewhere around 1990. According to Mayan tradition we are now in a great time of change, on 12/21/2012 we will shift into the 5th cycle, a time of renewing with our spiritual selves, when our senses our heightned and all our questions are answered. They thought this could come with great destruction or peacefully, depending on how the human race responded.

The Mayan culture was very interesting, they predicted solar events over a thousand years in advance, the solar alignment, an extremely rare event, of our galaxy on 12/21/2012, we are just finding out about now.

-To the person above me

You are an idiot. The Mayans did not try to predict their own demise from the Spanish inquisitors, they were concerned with cosmic events, not territorial control. These people were not psychics or prophets, they used very advanced scientific methods to predict cosmic events.

LISTEN, THIS IS IN CAPITAL LETTORS, THE MAYANS DID NOT PRETEND TO BE PROPHETS. They did not predict future changable events. Please learn the slightest about what you are talking about before you delve into it. They predicted COSMIC EVENTS, That means events brought on through our relationship to the universe and our galaxy, these our scientific calculations, not prophetic ones. Geeez...

The end of the world has been incorrectly predicted hundreds of times. I'll believe it when I see it. Anyway the aztecs never said it would be the end of the world, they said that there would be a rebirth of some kind. Many archeologists believe that the world will enter a new cycle which will bring forth change, this process will begin in 2012 but might take 10 or 20 years to finish.

12-21-2012 has nothing to do with any Aztec Calendar. It's the FIRST day of Baktun 13 of the MAYAN Long Count Calendar, and that calendar is not ending (nor is any other) on that day.
The Mayan people had no concept of "technology" so your assumptions on "why" are also wrong.
So you've got two wrongs...nothing to comment on.
It is a terrible thing that species are going extinct and that humans are damaging the earth...but it's got nothing to do with Aztecs, Mayans or calendars.

Uh, all the things you list ARE man-made things --climate change due to sludge we've been dumping into the atmosphere; extinctions due to reduced habitats and other ecological changes.

As some others have pointed out, hysterical people have predicted the End of it All innumerable times, and we're still here.

You could do a search for questions on this site on 2012 and read gazzillions of questions and answers on this very topic.

Basically, it's bunk.

Matthew 24:36 - “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father."

I think the Aztec guy who was in charge of making the calendars got too old and died, or got tired of doing it. I don't think it means anything. I do believe we are living in the last days and the end is VERY near. But it's not up to me or anyone on earth to say when it will happen.

I actually believe that this could be the end. The aztecs were some of the most enlightened people ever to walk the face of the earth. They were geiuses, shamans, and engineers, far from their time.

I think the Earth is in its constant ever changing mode as it has been since the beginning of time.

The Aztecs were wrong about the end of their calendar, as they no longer exist, and it happened quite a while ago.
