Sheriff Jim Pendergraph first noticed the changes in his jail population early in the decade, as illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries poured into Charlotte and elsewhere in Mecklenburg County, N.C., to find jobs in the robust North Carolina economy.

In Butler County, Ohio, Sheriff Richard K. Jones became so frustrated with the swelling population of undocumented suspects in his jail a couple of years ago that he symbolically billed the federal government for his incarceration costs and posted a big yellow sign near the jail reading: "Illegal aliens here."

Pendergraph and Jones are part of a growing national debate over how to handle undocumented criminals, a debate that's flared anew with the arrest of an illegal immigrant in the execution-style slayings of three college students in New Jersey.

Criminal aliens, as the federal government classifies them, constitute more than a fourth of the inmates in federal prisons. Those still at large often fall between the cracks of an overburdened and uneven enforcement system, escaping detection and deportation.

More than 300,000 criminal aliens are expected to be placed in state and local jails this year, according to a forecast last year by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general. Most might remain in this country after serving their sentences because the federal government lacks the resources to identify, detain and deport them, the audit said.

The suspect in the Newark killings, Jose Carranza, is an illegal immigrant from Peru who was out on bond on assault and child-rape charges. Authorities said they were unaware that Carranza was in the country illegally, largely because local policy prohibits officers from questioning suspects about their immigration status.

Newark is one of dozens of cities with "sanctuary" policies designed to keep local law enforcement officers from racially profiling suspects...

Build a huge prison for illegal criminals only. Each country can check out who it has and transfer them to their own prisons if that`s where the crime occured. They can all be fingerprinted and identified in a seperate system. Make sure it is built in the state with the death penalty and short amounts of time before executed for serious crimes.

How about doing some research yourself before you start posting lies on the Internet. You are so wrong! OF COURSE IT'S A CRIME TO CROSS THE US BORDER ILLEGALLY. What the heck are you babbling about. You are so ignorant about our immigration laws and criminal law in general! If it isn't a crime, why do they deport and/or jail the illegals? "Criminal law is the body of law that defines criminal offences and the penalties for convicted offenders.[13] Apprehending, charging, and trying suspected offenders is regulated by the law of criminal procedure.[14] In every jurisdiction, a crime is committed where three elements are fulfilled. First, the accused must commit the criminal act, or actus reus (guilty act).[15] Second, there must exist a victim, who suffered a legally recognised harm. In the case of victimless crimes, the legal system regards the accused, or society at large, as the victim of the criminal act. Third, there must exist causation, which is a logical connection, supported by evidence, that establishes the link between the criminal act and the harm suffered." The illegals KNOW they are breaking the law. and they are hurting every American financially through taxes, schools, health care, etc... You may be pro-illegal but you law is not on your side! Gee, out of 33 answers only 6 agree with you. Hum!!!! BTW, stop being rude in emails!

Since then, the Atty General of New Jersey required police to run immigration status on people they arrest.

However, it is a huge number, and an overlarge percentage. This isn't a matter of saying 'everyone who is here illegally also commits other crimes that would land them jail time'. It is just a fact that when people come across a border illegally, a certain percentage are the kind of people no country in their right mind would let in legally. This is nothing new, Jesse James used the border to his advantage long ago.

When people, in the name of all things PC, refuse to deal in a practical matter with this twice-illegal subset, it really undermines credibility in any enforcement efforts of any kind. If when jailed we don't even check....C'MON!

Is how the argument goes.

All twice illegal and gang members need to go, after serving whatever sentence appropriate. Period.

It's simple arithmetic.
If there's 2 million illegal aliens sneaking into the country every year and we're only deporting 300,000 what do they think is going to happen?
We really need to be deporting 3 million per year and to close that border totally.
We need to start getting rid of any politician who is not willing to get the job done.

I would like to have a bill passed where whatever the criminal illegal aliens have, their possessions, be confiscated and sold to help with their time spent in jail and then for their deportation afterwards. If any proceeds are left, they could go into a 'bank' for other criminal illegal aliens' deportations.

All the continued lawlessness, overcrowds jails and prisons and makes it to where more are not arrested when they should be, more let out early when they shouldn't be and less time to follow the rules and check people out thourghly for crimes in other areas or states to get them out of our country. They aren't all nice people who are here illegally.

Start executing those offenders that are charged with capital crimes and I bet it will have a trickle down effect.

We should bill the country's that they come from. We should also charged those countries for the hospital bills that those people have made. So we can pay for or owen people. Thanks George Bush and all others that help them come here.
Better yet any one who hires one should get three or more years in jail for hiring them.

Build more jails. There will be more crime when these illegal aliens can't find work in the housing industry.
