499.99 x 10% = 50.00 Subtract the $50 from the $499.99 to get amount before tax, which would be $449.99

Multiply $499.99 by .1. You get $49.99 off the original price.

If you don't have a calculator handy, there's another easy way to quickly calculate a discount. 10% off is another way of saying "10 cents off for every dollar." So for every dollar that the item costs originally, you get 10 cents off. Or, put another way, for every 10 dollars that the item costs, you get $1 off. Since there are 50 "10 dollar" chunks in $500, you get $50 off. It's not hard on other items either. Say there is a $30 shirt that is 25% off. For every dollar of the shirt's cost, you get 25 cents off. Since there are 4 quarters in a dollar, for every 4 dollars that the shirt costs, you get a dollar off. So you'd get about 7 dollars off the shirt. It gets easier the more you do it and if you're a bargain hunter like me you'll get lots of practice. :)
