yes, i agree. The maniacal murderous whackjob we read about in the OT eclipses all waring deceitful thugs in all recorded history.

It's no more despicable than history books, or watching the 5:00 news, or in some neighborhoods, just looking out your window. So when did mankind get so righteous that they should judge God's word?

It's certainly a bit grim, yes. Plagues, smiting, "abominations", an insecure deity that demands regular demonstrations of love...
I'm rather hampered in that I don't have a full understanding of very many OTHER conceptions of divinity to compare it with. But certainly as a child and an adult both, I couldn't help thinking the Old Testament god had...well, issues to say the least!

The Old Testament is about the bringing forth of the Law, starting with the Ten Commandments, the foundation of Gods government. This pointed toward the Messiah who would embody the Law.

No, and quite frankly it's extremely arrogant of you, a mere human, dust, to stand in judgment of the Almighty.
Jehovah directed ancient Israel to use warfare to take possession of the land that he himself designated as their inheritance and to execute people whose depraved practices and defiance of the true God caused Jehovah to view them as being no longer fit to live. (Deut. 7:1, 2, 5; 9:5; Lev. 18:24, 25) Nevertheless, mercy was shown to Rahab and to the Gibeonites because they demonstrated faith in Jehovah. (Josh. 2:9-13; 9:24-27) In the Law covenant God laid down RULES for warfare that he would approve, stipulating exemptions and the manner in which this warfare was to be carried out. Such were truly holy wars of Jehovah. That is not true of the carnal warfare of any nation today.
Now, it's obvious you haven't grasped the meaning of the Scriptures you've read or gotten the real message, so anytime you'd like, you could get a Bible study. It might be nice for you to actually understand what you're reading. :)

The Inca, Mayan and Aztec religions were pretty red in tooth and obsidian knife.
But I never read their holy books, so I can't compare them to the OT.
The OT god is a vicious, vengeful insecure bastard. Makes you wonder what the old fogies who created the stories were like.

Yep, gotta agree with that one.
But I do realize that it was a primitive people's way of conceptualizing God that reflected their culture and their worldviews.
We should've grown some since then, but unfortunately there are still a lot of fundamentalists out there who love believing in that caricature of God instead of the real God. Cartoons are always more easy to manipulate than real deities.

In the words of Richard Dawkins, "The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."
I couldn't agree more.

No the Greek and Aztec gods where of the same disposition.
Cruel, treacherous, and violent, humans and their gods seem very similar.

No. That 'honor' goes to the atheistic interpretations of the OT that I've seen on these boards.
