Here are a few tips:

1. You MUST exercise if you want to lose weight and keep it off, so do something every day, even if it’s just a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood. Don’t say you don’t have time for exercise; you have to MAKE time. Yes, it takes time and effort, but you’re worth it, right?

2. Walk as much as you want, but don’t do cardio for more than 40 minutes at a time. If you do, you risk burning muscle instead of fat.

3. If you do strength training, use light weights and do lots of repetitions. That’ll really help you “tone up.”

4. Your diet will make you or break you. You have probably learned bad eating habits over time (most people do). That’s not your fault, but now you have to deal with it. Make a commitment to yourself to unlearn those bad habits and re-learn better habits.

5. Eat breakfast every day within an hour of getting up. People who don’t are 450% more likely to be overweight.

6. Eat six small meals or snacks per day instead of three squares per day or one big meal per day. Your body expends energy digesting your food, so eating smaller portions more often keeps your metabolism running high because you’re constantly digesting food.

7. Avoid these as much as possible:

-- Trans fat (any type of partially or fully hydrogenated oil)
-- High fructose corn syrup (soft drinks are LOADED with it)
-- Fast food
-- Junk food
-- White sugar, white flour, white rice, white potatoes
-- The deadly C’s (cookies, cakes, candy, chips, cola)

8. Build your diet around these trim-body-friendly foods:

-- Nuts, any kind (almonds are best)
-- Beans/Legumes
-- Fresh vegetables (green is GREAT!!!)
-- Dairy products (as long as they’re low-fat or non-fat)
-- Eggs
-- Lean meats (fish and poultry top the list)
-- Olive oil
-- Whole grain breads/cereals/pasta
-- Fresh fruits (anything that ends in “berry” is a winner)
-- Tea (green tea or black pekoe tea)
-- Cold water or ice water (your body has to expend extra calories to heat it up)

9. Desserts and treats are the exception, not the rule. Having said that, however, (1) you can have a couple of pieces of chocolate every day – just don’t overdo, and (2) Allow yourself one “cheat meal” every week where you eat and drink whatever you want as long as you don’t gorge yourself. That’ll help keep you from feeling deprived and it’ll make it easier to stick with your new healthy eating plan.

Good luck!

It's great that you want to start a healthy lifestyle - the recognition and desire to do so is the first big step. Congrats! So, the next step is to figure out what exactly you need to do.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of information out there to sift through and a lot of it seems or is contradictory. Everyone knows that healthy diet and exercise is what's needed and there are no shortcuts to a healthy lifestyle, but what is needed for you is important to know. Additionally, what you need to determine is what is best for you since you're just starting out, which will be greatly different from someone who is advanced and has had a healthy lifestyle for years.

The first big mistake most people make is hitting exercise too hard too fast and going cold turkey on the diet.

For exercise, it's best to ease into a routine. You mentioned swimming as one possibility, which is an excellent cardio exercise; so, what you'll want to do if you haven't done it much before is work on your strokes, and only stay in the pool 10-15 minutes the first week, going every other day. Keep it light the first few days, don't try to push yourself. Your body has to have time to adjust to the new stresses being put on it and you don't want to be miserably sore. After a couple of weeks start increasing the intensity some as well as the time. Be consistent in this, slowly increasing intensity and time until you've reached a desired time, which could be a matter of several weeks. Once you've reached a desired time, say 30 minutes of pool time, then start working on increasing the distance of the swim within that alloted time. This will ensure you're increasing intensity as you advance and you're getting an effective workout. Other exercises will work the same way, and increased overall daily activity will help tremendously. Just be sure to warm up before and stretch well after exercises.

For a healthy lifestyle, a combination of strength training and cardio is very important - too often people overlook one form of exercise or another for some reason. So I suggest definitely checking out weight training, and get a personal trainer if at all possible. Doing the exercises correctly and safely is very important for maximum effectiveness.

For diet, what I've found works best is to gradually improve and change it. Allow yourself cheat days, but don't binge. What I do is once a week cut out something bad and replace it with something good. So, if you're used to having a rich dessert every day, replace the dessert with something healthy instead. If you're used to drinking sugar sodas every day, replace them with sugar free sodas, or better yet, water. Do this once a week for particular items. Aim for replacing bad meal items such as doughnuts or pastries with whole grains. Instead of fast food, look for whole foods (preferably those you've prepared yourself). In order to be healthy, you'll have to learn to cook for yourself - you have no control over the quality of the foods when eating out.

Healthy foods will consist of high fiber carbs, lean proteins and good fats in a ratio of 40/40/20 of your caloric intake. Research has consistently shown that eating several smaller meals per day is far superior than just a few larger meals - this keeps your insulin and blood sugar levels steady and keeps you feeling sated. Try to avoid highly processed foods you get from the grocery or from restaurants - in general, the more ingredients in an item, the more processed it is - foods with only single ingredients are always the best.

Your best weapon will be education on health, exercise and nutrition, to really learn about how certain exercises and foods affect the body and how to manipulate them to your favor. That's the only way to succeed in keeping a healthy lifestyle.

Good luck!

Cut out all the snacks . You are on a vicious circle of boosting blood sugar followed by a crash.
Just eat three good meals a day with little refined sugar or animal fat and walk everywhere.

swimming is a great exercise, so isnt walking. but i think your going to burn more swimming. however dont do too much and discurage yourself from exercise. take it easy and work yourself into shape. when you are at home try to limit mindless eating in front of the television. turn everything off when your eating and just enjoy your meal this way your body recognizes you've already eaten and wont beg for more food when its not really hungry.
