Not necessarily the same... You could define the space better with two different curtains and a big old area rug in the living room, and arrange the furniture so it will also help define space. I think that's what I'd do.
Another route would be to have different styles of curtains in the same color in both rooms, if you'd rather have one big room.

My house does the same thing. You can see the difference in the rooms though because the living room has carpet and the kitchen has tile so you can see when it seperates. Painting it a different color might be nice too, Maybe if you went to Home Depot or Lowes they might be able to give you a few tips. Hope you find something. Good Luck!

I would suggest hanging the same curtains, or at least have them match. Some options would be;
hanging drapes in living room and having roman blinds made for the kitchen in the same material as the drapes.
or using two different fabrics that match, a striped drape in the living room and a solid fabric in the kitchen using one of the colours from the stripe in the living room fabric.

No, you don't have to have the same curtains. In fact, I think it would look better with two different patterns that compliment each other in color.
I live in a studio apartment and have the same issue. I have more "bedroomy" looking curtains around the sleeping area, and more "kitcheny" looking curtains in the kitchen area. Both have purple in them and have flower patterns, but the kitchen ones are much lighter and more airy looking.

It would be better to do coordinating fabrics rather than the same so each space has it's own definition. In other words, if you wanted a floral for the living room, choose a coordinating stripe for the kitchen.....along those lines. If you aren't good at choosing fabrics, have the person in the drapery or fabric section help you.

It really depends on what you're aiming for. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to keep common area rooms alike. I haven't seen a pic of your rooms, but if the curtains don't match, will it drive you crazy? It would me.

If the windows set behind the dining table and you want a certain color to be in that area,just put that color curtain there.Then just put drapes or curtains that go with your living room colors on the other window...

I would do the same color or complimenting colors to the other colors you have in your two rooms. I also agree w/ the person who said you could use the same color but different current styles...i.e. a valance only in the kitchen window maybe.
