I know many secretly help the police. I have been to one in the past who was good and things have come true - but was this merely coincidence?

Yes. It was coincidence, combined with skill in a profession. A good psychic can glean a great deal of information from you during a session. The technique is called "cold reading" and there was a marvelous episode in South Park regarding it ("The Greatest Douche in the Universe").

As far as psychics helping police (or the intelligence services), they sometimes come up with "clues" which can be related to the actual crime. On the other hand, they also come up with "clues" which cannot and none of their "clues" have the specificity that one would expect from a true psychic (as in "Joe Smith did it and buried the body east of the oak tree at 123 Main Street").

As far as accuracy, look at famous psychic Elizabeth Baron's Annual Predictions for 2006. If you are interested in the exact text, the link is below.

1) Six major earthquakes, two in America. (reality - eleven earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude or higher, none in America)
2) Saddam's trial will be delayed over and over but he will get the death penalty (reality - the trial was relatively swift and the death penalty was not hard to predict)
3) There will be troops in Iraq for at least three more years but far fewer by the end of 2006 (reality - troop levels increased)
4) 50,000 to 100,000 fatal cases of avian flu (reality - in 2006 there were 115 cases with 79 deaths)
5) The stock market will be "down, down, down" (reality - the Dow was up about 1700 points)

Not a stellar year for Elizabeth but typical for psychics.

Note that I chose her without looking at her predictions, she was just the first individual psychic I found on google who posted her predictions for prior years.

I have never had any experiences with psychics or seen anything convincing to make me believe there is something supernatural going on. If you pay attention, psychics usually only tell you things that you already knew or suspected. My instincts are pretty good and I have accurately predicted a lot of things, but I attribute this to my instinct and intuition working in very real ways in my brain, even if I don't have a complete neurological understanding of what is going on. This could be a very plausible explanation for some psychic "abilities."

Re these psychic and supernatural detective shows on television: Geez they get on my nerves. As I said before, watch them carefully, aside from a few parlor tricks (lights going on and off, "voices", selective editing) at the end of the show, they have provided no information that is either of use or wasn't already known. If they can't provide useful information or new information, then what is the point? If there are psychics who have actually helped the police, they aren't on these shows.

1.) Psychics do not help the police. The only ones who claim this are psychics. Ask for a reference and check that with the police and they will tell you the truth--psychics have never offered any real assistance in solving a crime. *If* the police agree to work with a psychic it's only to offer comfort to a desperate and grieving family that all options have been explored.

2.) If you have experienced a psychic who has claimed to be able to see the future, you should refer him/her to www.randi.org where there is a one million dollar prize waiting for anyone who can demonstrate psychic ability.

3.) Most psychic "hits" can be explained in a number of ways. Usually they are making general statements that are either so broad as to have many interpretations or else, if they are specific, it's by using a high-probability prediction. They use cold reading and rely on confirmation bias as verification.

4.) This question should be in the Science & Mathematics/Alternative section.

I have had my very own psychic moments...Honestly!!! pretty scary but cool at the same time. I tell ppl close to me and then we watch together as things unfold the way I 'saw' it unfolding.

My answer is yes!
The reason science often cant prove it is because it is inconsitant I have 'seen' a girl slip over in a fountain full of children 10 seconds before she actually has. I have thought about someone from 10 years earlier only to bump into them the next day!! I had a dream that told me my sister was moving abroad only to discover the next day on the phone that my sister was moving to america...all coincidences I have a diary full of these coincidences but can I prove it to someone? if I have long enough sometimes I dont have anything for a couple of months and then lots of things happen.

Yep, each physique has some degree of psychic ability. as an party, maximum persons can tell on an identical time as somebody is gazing them. each and each and each and each guy or female who's amazingly psychic will in many circumstances have a distinctive psychic ability that they are solid in. I even have envisioned births and deaths precise on many activities, so it rather is extremely accessible that the psychic you talk of has this honestly skills additionally. it rather is extremely not likely that the premonition replace suited right into a accident or a helpful guess as a results of fact the percentages are way against that. This guy or female feels like the actual deal.

Ok I'll ans. this again...yes there are true psychics.
Next she told me I would have a new job, someplace where they store things and a nice manager to work for.

Well later on I got transfered to the supply room, and had a great boss to work for!!

Another time she said "I see you moving boxes" and yes I had packed and moved some boxes into the front room, and made plans to move.

How does she know these things? Well like I said I didn't tell her anything, I just handed her my keys and then she closed her eyes for awhile and starting telling me all this.

I don't believe there are genuine psychics but I'm trying to keep an open mind about it.
That T.V psychic Sylvia Brown (?) she's about as fake as I have ever seen yet she has dozens of books and T.V appearances because there is a desperate need to believe.

No.

James Randi has one million dollars in cash, in the bank, ready to pay any psychic that can demonstrate psychic ability under scientifically controlled conditions. He has had that money available for the last 20 plus years and no one has yet to claim it.

James Randi has also debunked every famous psychic out there from John Edwards to Uri Geller and they keep on crawling out from under the rocks.

I can provisionally accept that there may be people who can make use of a mental faculty that most of us either don't have or aren't aware of, as a means of obtaining specific information. That said, I think it goes without saying that all parlor psychics for pay are hucksters. People like Sylvia Brown and John Edwards (was that his name?) are "cold readers" who take the little subconscious queues their subjects give them and develop them into a more or less convincing "story."

There are both true and fake psychics.

The true ones don't charge money for their gift; however, they will rarely reveal that they have the gift, either.

I believe that to some degree, we're all a bit psychic.... I know I am.
