First, do you believe that life has a hidden/obvious meaning that is the same for all people ~

~ or do you believe that life has no default meaning and you have to make one yourself?

Either way, does it bother you that, realistically speaking, life really has no meaning?

God Bless the Pope: Please don't twist the words. I said meaning, not worth or impact.

Purpose and meaning and worth are all related. Living for a purpose gives our lives meaning and worth.

I think meaning and worth are essentially the same. For example, if someone who had never seen a dollar bill asked the meaning of it, my answer would be exactly the same as if that person had asked about the worth of it.

According to the atheist Bertrand Russell, purpose requires a God by the very definition of the word.

Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.”

No purpose, no meaning, no worth, no point to life will greatly bother anyone who honestly confronts it but, I guess fortunately for some, our ability for self delusion comes to the rescue. But honestly confronting it can be dangerous.

"There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide. Deciding whether or not life is worth living is to answer the fundamental question in philosophy. All other questions follow from that." (Albert Camus)

(Shrugs) Seems to bother some folk, yeah. Not me. As you say, life has no intrinsic, overarching "meaning", it just...is. That doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I find it rather comforting and liberating. But it certainly does seem to bother some people, who then claim some special place in the universal "scheme of things" can be achieved by following a particular faith or moral code...

If you knew what was going to happen in every movie you saw, would you bother to go see them? We NEED for life to not have a default meaning.

I believe life has a distinct meaning for each of us. As a believer in reincarnation, I believe that we have a purpose for coming here before we come. We seek to learn something and experience something specific. Like for instance, a life as a Down's person. That soul chose to live life in a Down's body.

I know life DOES have meaning, so your question does not register with me. But, what a sad existence it must be for those who believe their life has no more meaning than the life of an Amoeba

I'm ok with making my own meaning. It sounds better than having an external source force a meaning on me.

And I'm ok with life having no meaning at all. I'm enjoying mine. It's better than the alternative, to the best of my knowledge.
