The tables were very close together and the people on the next table not only waved their cutlery about (surprised they knew what it was for), but talked while shovelling vast quantities of food into their mouths. Then they removed bits and but them back on the plate and discussed, at length, at the top of their voices, what these 'bits' might be! Yuk, we had to go, couldn't enjoy our meal with them next to us!

in a situation such as this as you can possibly do is ask to be seated elsewhere. Getting into a debate about table manners with the next table, would have solved nothing although "they" may have been terribly gross it's really none of your business.

If it should ever happen again, when the waiter comes to ask if everything is all right, ask him about the possibility of being moved. If he says no, ask for the manager. You have as much right to enjoy a meal out as the people on the other table.

My father had a little friend home from school one day and this little friend had a terrible habit slurping his food and eating with his mouth open, which did not please my grandmother very much.

She sat them down to tea and everytime the little friend used to eat badly my grand mother would address her son "James, don't eat with your mouth open, there's a good boy."

My poor father, who had been brought up to eat with his mouth shut and not to slurp was confused and a bit upset, but the other boy sat up and took note and was corrected without even knowing it. Granny did explain to my father what was happening and he repeated the excercise with our neighbours.

Try doing that with your family. If the people on the next table have bad manners maybe reprimand each other. But do not be too obvious.

They don't sound like the kind of people you'd want to ask to pipe down. I'd have gone quietly to the waiter or manager and asked to be moved.
At least none of them were on your table, I went out with my husband's family to a restaurant and his sister licked her knife then picked her plate up and sipped the gravy off it. I nearly died.

Gross! I would quietly explain to the waiter, and asked to be moved to another table.
