I went to the dentist today after 13 years (i was scared quite badly 13 years ago) and had a filling and scale and polish. It didn't hurt but i was so terrified at one point i was hardly able to draw breath. How can i make myself relax?

I went through the EXACT same thing. A dentist long ago caused me so much pain that I avoided going until I developed an extremely painful abscess. It hurt so bad I figured whatever the dentist did couldn't be worse than the pain I was experiencing.
By chance , the dentist I chose was
COMPLETELY pain free. Even the 2 root canals. You need to find a dentist who will listen to you and understand your fears without lecturing. Someone who is compassionate will give you security you need . There are dentists who specialize in dealing with frightened patients. Beware of the ones who offer twilight sleep hastily. A good dentist will not do this without first trying the procedure without it.
Dentistry has changed a LOT. I had 18 years worth of neglect restored within a year! ZERO pain through major procedures.
Use your intuition. A dentist who is compassionate and speaks to you as a person is your KEY to overcoming this fear. You may also wish to read self help books or such initially.
I learned to close my eyes during the procedures and visualize different places and things. One time I completely forgot I was Being worked on!
Only the best of luck to you. I have been there and done that.
You will have NO regrets and feel so much better with a healthy smile.
Proud daughter of an awesome dentist who passed away 2 years ago.

If you can find a dentist that you trust not to hurt you, then you have won half the battle. If you are still finding that you are nervous and scared ask if they have nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Believe me when I tell you that it helps.
Many years ago I had a really bad dental experience and developed a fear of the dentist that lasted about 20 years. I went through many abcesses, I would go to the hospital and get antibiotics to avoid going to the dentist.
Finally, last year I went to a dentist and was told that all of my teeth had to be removed. I found an oral sugeon that was willing to put me to sleep to remove the teeth. I had to go 4 times since they could not do them all at once. After a bad reaction to the anesthesia during the third visit I was told that I would have to have the last four teeth pulled while awake. I was scared to death but they gave me nitrous oxide and I was fine.
If you cannot find a dentist that uses nitrous oxide, see if they can give you Valium to take the night before and morning of your appointments and breathe slowly and deeply through your nose during the appointment. That might help.

Good Luck

I used to be terrified of the dentist until I found one that administered R.A. (Relative Analgesia). The non smelling gas which is delivered via a tiny mask on the end of your nose makes you completely relaxed. Time has no relevance. An hour would seem like a couple of seconds. There are no side effects, no sickness afterwards. It is wonderful. Check out the below link for more information :

I haven't figured that out yet. I have been a dental phobic for years. You may find this group helpful. They have all phobic patients on it.

I did however find a sleep dentist, so I get 3 teaspoons of Halcion per visit. It's nice to not know what is going on. It's Amnesia effect is very strong.
My advice is to find a sleep dentist in your area. You'll be happy that you did.

My cousin had a morbid fear of the dentist and left it as long as she was physically able to stand the toothache... She went to her local doctor first and he prescribed 2 valium, one to take the night before and one to take the morning of her dentist appt... it worked for her! Good luck!!!

Just realize that the dentist can't kill you, and he won't eat you, lol.
If you really are still nervous by the visit to the dentist, ask him to prescribe you an anti-anxiety medication. This way your future visits will be more comfortable. Just explain your feelings to him. Good luck. ;-)
