There has always been dispute among many Lebanese Catholics and Muslims- what is the real reason behind these, politics or religion? Becauses the country is torn and still remains torn- there seems to be no way out in lebanon, history keeps repeating itself.

It is politics, geography, economics and religion. Catholics there were heavily persecuted and most moved to the mountains. When Islam came about it took hold in the valleys. Before the two religions met, they were already culturally two different groups of people. Islam converted those who were culturally similar and it is easier to defeat an army in a valley than an army on the top of a mountain. So it remained a Catholic stronghold long after the Muslim conquest.

The geographical differences naturally also create economic differences and the political structure of Lebanon creates forcible power sharing among the participants.

Lebanon's poltical failures are primarily outsider interventions. Lebanon has all the makings of a stable society, its neighbors do not. It is easier to visit your problems on your neighbors than have people look too closely at their own government.
