In the days when antiseptic wasn't available, like on cattle rides in the old west, if someone got injured, they would pour liquor on the wound to kill the bacteria and help fight infection. Usually, though, it wasn't vodka. It was whiskey. That's pretty much what you drank if you went to a bar and asked for the hard stuff. If you were in Mexico, it was tequila, Russia, vodka, and so on. Also, for really bad wounds, like when they would have to saw off someone's leg or something because the infection got too bad, not only would they use the liquor on the wound, but they'd tell the person to drink it as well because it would kill some of the pain during the surgery.
As far as uses for vodka nowadays, other than drinking it, I'm not sure. I did just find out though that using beer or ammonia on slugs will kill them. They are are attracted to something in beer and if you put a dish of it near a plant you know they are eating of yours, they will crawl in and die. Ammonia on the other hand just plain kills them. My mom killed the first a three slugs we found in our front yard. I did the second one and the third one got away. But, as I poured the stuff on the slug it writhed in it for about three minutes, stopped moving eventually, turned kinda transparent, and then started "melting" away. Maybe vodka could kill slugs? Good luck.

Best cure for sore throats if you catch it early - gargle with vodka. Seriously, been doing it for years and they never progress to a full blown sore throat. 3 times a day, dilute it if you have to.
Also, replacing a small portion of the liquid (i.e. water) in batter with vodka makes the batter soak up less oil when deep frying - true. Don't know exactly how much, maybe 1/5 ? 1/10 ?
