I,m sorry to hear about that. You and your husband will be in my thoughts, this may be a little off on a tangent as concerns your question, but i have just lost a very good friend of mine to Hodgkins Lymphoma, he was diagnosed far too late, coincidence being he was an Electrician too,he worked at a nuclear power plant here in England, his family are trying to put together a case, proving it was his working environment that triggered the disease.

Most often Medicaid depends on income. Have your husband apply for SSI. If he can qualify then he will be automactically eligible for Medicaid. Also try the American Cancer Soceity. Trying talking with a social worker at the hospital where your husband is being treated. They should know of local organizations that can help.

They find out how much your expenses are, what you own and what you make. The formula for assistance will give you based on need. So if you use your 31k to live on and it is documented, you still get help. It's all in the numbers. You may only get partial assistance.
With cancer, the most effective trick seems to be lifestyle changes that most people are addicted to not making. All the treatments, although society seems to continue to pay and pay, don't seem to keep cancer patients alive al that well, a few, but not many only living a couple of years. I highly suggest lifestyle changes in diet, moderate exercise with good form and less carcinogen exposure. This is a more complicated life than they tell you when you are growing up.

Your local chapter of the American Cancer Society can probably give you information about local charities that might help you. You should also talk to the cancer clinic medical social workers as they usually have a ton of information and resources for you to consider.
ACS: Medical Insurance and Financial Assistance for the Cancer Patient
http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MLT/content/MLT_1x_Medical_Insurance_and_Financial_Assistance_for_the_Cancer_Patient.asp
And, you can also call or chat with online social workers at this non-profit site:

i'm very sorry to hear that. i too have cancer and well, i know that cancer is classified as a "disability", like your husband can qualify for Social Security Disability.
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/
maybe a quick phone call will get you on the right foot,
the toll-free telephone number is 800-772-1213.
or visit:
https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp
you have to start immediately though, as with all government help, this can be really time consuming.
