I fell in love with a 6-year-old mini schnauzer at a shelter over the weekend, but I wouldn't want him to hurt my cat.

If they were raised with them.. or socialized with them they will be fine.. however if it's a 6 yr old that already has an aggression to cats, it's unlikely to change..

I have one at the moment who I had as a puppy .. and I brought him to friends houses that had cats so he is fine with them... but the 2 yr old that we adopted a bit later (he's now 9) already had issues with them.. I tried socializing him with them, but it didn't work..

My grandma's best friend has a schnauzer who grew up with a cat and they get along great - she's always showing me pictures of them curled up together hehe. Anyway, I don't think it matters so much the breed as it does the specific dog/cat. Does your kitty like other animals? Would he/she even be open to another pet in the place? Also, consider the age of the schnauzer - if it hasn't been raised with a cat (or any other pets or anything) it may not be willing to accept one this late in life. Ask at the shelter if he has a history that they know, and if he's gotten on with other pets before he might be okay. Also, make sure you have plenty of space for them to stay away from each other if they want to - my lab and my cat hate each other (ok well the cat hates the lab, and the lab is scared to death of the cat lol) but there is rarely a problem because they just stay in different parts of the house. Good luck (and good for you for considering to adopt a shelter dog!)

Any dog can be bad with cats, it depends on their unique personality. If the dog has been mistreated or can in some way connect bad things to cats then he obviously won't be good with them. No one breed is going to be worse than another though. Schnauzers are known for being very intelligent though so you could probably train him to get used to a cat. Just remember to keep a close eye on them both until you are sure they are happy with each other.

My adult standard schnouzer and poodle mix was excellent with all my cats (introduced when he was 5+ years old) and also babies and kids.
This site says its "better with other animals than most terriers, although it will gladly give chase" http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogprofile.do?id=2010
Brought up with the cat from a puppy, I think most any breed can be trained to at least tolerate and respect the cat.
