They tell you that you are sinning (emitting CO2), and the end of the world is near. That you should stop sinning and send them money to help "spread The Word". Yet they fly around in private jets and have huge power hungry homes like Al Gore and Barbara Streisand. (Does anyone remeber Jimmy Swaggert's night with the hookers?)
They spread fear of the end of the world so they can get money to keep spreading the word and "doing something about it". They spread so much fear that taxpayers willingly let their governments spend money on dubious science.
Televangelists, like global warming types demonize anyone who does not agree with them. They say that money for opponents comes from evil oil corporations (as if that was any worse than money earned from scaremongering and damning all to hell)

If your read the title I refer to "The Alarmist" not the movement as a whole. Or the scientist that are willing to admit that the science is NOT settled.

Nothing is new under the sun. Since the dawn of man somebody has stood behind the fire shook a rattle, threw some magic dust in the flames for an attention getter and went on about all the bogermonsters that would befall the tribe if they didn't go along with the medicine mans prescription.
Do you get a free mammoth steak dinner if you tell the masses that every things cool all the time?
Na you get way more if the tribe scared is out of their mind.
Make them beholding to you on a constant basis.
Some could hunt, some could make tools, some could fix up the cave, What's the poor jerk with no ability other than a big yap gonna do?

Maybe they are filling a gap in the market as Christian Televangelists have lost credibility as sooner or later they all seem to have a credibility crisis, just like Jimmy Swaggert.
On the other hand, maybe cutting down on energy consumption is doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. The world isn't really coming to an end, but we can't go on consuming oil at a faster and faster rate indefinately.

Your metaphor fails. Climate scientists don't tell you are sinning by emitting carbon dioxide, they don't tell you that the end is near, they don't tell you to send them money, they don't demonize people who don't agree with them, and they don't fly around in private jets. Try again.
You may be right that one or two of the more well known GW theory proponents (Al Gore, for example) are a bit on the extreme end. But since you should be ignoring them anyway it doesn't matter. It's like pretending that televangelists represent the views of every single Christian on the planet. It's just dumb.

Because, like all ideology pimps, they are of the firm belief that their's is the only way.
People who take a more pragmatic approach are classified as infidels and condemned for their heretic beliefs.
I firmly believe in global warming. Things do seem to be actually warming up. I also view all models of future calamity with intense scepticism, given that I am a database programmer and know how those models are made. Any actions taken as a result of those models are basically alchemy. My fear is that the "fix" would be worse than the problem.

I agree with your metaphor, but I would like to expand upon it. Alarmists do not speak for the whole movement, just like televangelists do not speak for all Christians. In each case, they just happen to be the loudest.

I'll agree that some celebrities are subject to your criticism.
But not global warming scientists.
Among scientists, it's actually the "skeptics" who act more like televangelists (a better analogy might be cult leaders). Often they rely on arguments that appeal to ordinary people's "common sense" (ie, faith), rather than scientific data. Sometimes they distort the facts. It seems like they would rather speak to the media than try to publish their nonsense in legitimate scientific journals.
You can see many of those false arguments (and their refutation by science and data) here:

This is a rather hysterical post. Do you have some specifics to back it up. I mean Gore obviously is a hypocritical imbecile, but that's old news. The Evangelical Christain community is now demanding action on Global Warming, but isn't that to be expected? They took long enough to choose a side, and I'm glad it was the correct one.

Real science invites skepticism. Anti-global warming scientists are treated as pariahs because the pro-global warming scientists are enjoying the gravy train. Real science deals in facts not consensus. The IPCC says global warming is "very likely" caused by man and wants the world to change based on their opinion. The pro-global warming lobby wants us to just trust them and their short-sighted solutions.

Global warming is a religion, not a science. And like other religions, man is at fault for all of the worlds problems, and it is man's intelligence that is the new original sin.
