Yes... it did seem like a slow response. I think they did finally break out an extinguisher but it wasn't right away. I noticed Denny Hamlin was slow getting out of his car when it caught on fire. Maybe Nascar needs to review the safety devices and see if there is a better way of designing these things. If he had been knocked unconscious it could have been worse. Good observation.

Well the first rescue worker on the scene didn't appear to have a fire extinguisher for whatever reason. Also the fire was an oil fire and not a gasoline fire so while the major danger was smoke I don't think he was in danger of buring, the small flames coming up through the gearshift would not have hurt him. I also thought that MW, who is 6 5 had a roof opening put in his cars a few years ago so he could get out that way. I have seen it before and watched him get out that way when he won, I won't if it's only on some of his cars. He also seemed to be haveing a lot of trouble with his HANS device detacting from the seat.

I was at the race, I noticed that how slow the rescue workers were working, after I saw it on TV it looked alot worse than it was in person...Now we know why Mikey likes the Car of Tomorrow, more room for big guys like him...I also think Nascar should work on something to help that hans device release quicker all drivers seem to struggle with it when they have to get out quicker.. I'm glad Mikey is okay, and Brad is okay from the Busch race on saturday....

Julvrug nailed this one, breathing in the chemicals from the extinguishers can be very harmfull and not something to be taken lightly.Mikey did mention that fact on Inside Nextel. That being said those safety guys did look totally unprepared and didnt invoke the kind of confidence you would think from safety personal. One of the scariest and funny incidents awhile back also involved Mikey when his car flipped and ended up upside down in the infield with tons of dirt and grass in it.Because Waltrip was upside down he had trouble getting his 6'5" frame out of the car and had to convince the safety crew to flip the car over.Only Mikey could make a scary situation like that one seem funny.

Well, the people they hire to come to the track are local EMT's and firemen. They are not specially trained to know what to do. NASCAR should really take a hard look at hiring a crew of people to come to every race, much like the NHRA has the safety safari. It is ridiculous how long they took to get him out, and this is not the first time it has happened to someone recently.

That's a good question and one that Mikey would like to know the answer to as well. On Inside Nextel Cup last night he said when the safety personnel got there he came up to the window and said "Are you gonna get out of there." With as quick as they were on the scene I have no idea why they didn't get an extinguisher going before they did anything else. Waltrip did say there was a little comfort in knowing they were right there if he needed assistance getting out of the car.

Maybe because if they use fire extinguishers with a person in the area, it will stop the oxygen and the person will not be able to breathe? Most fire extinguishers remove the oxygen from a fire, so it is better to make sure the individual will not be in the area they will be used. I did not see the fire, but if it was that close to Micheal, then they could not use an extinguisher until he was safely out of the way.

I thought momentarily the same thing you did, but you have to take in the factor that most of the chemicals in the fire ext. are going to be just as bad, if not worse than what is burning in the car. Sure, No one wants to get burned or inhale that smoke, but inhaling' all that, plus the fire ext. could of been more dangerous in itself. The only thumbs down for NASCAR is not having the roof hatch made mandatory for all drivers.

It would take longer to fight the fire. The driver has a Fire protective Nomex suit, gloves & the Helmet on. Did not see the crash myself, but Unlike NHRA's Full time team, NASCAR' relies on Locals for the safety. That may need to change. On the bright side, This was a oil fire & not Fuel.

Im glad he is ok and the first concern is geting the driver out of the car...Nascaar should come up with a quick release for all the safety gear they have on..he might of been able to get out quicker, and yes someone should of been putting the fire out also..maybe they can come up with an escape hatch something similar thta NHRA uses..
