It doesn't really matter as w-4's have nothing to do with filing taxes, all they do is tell the employer how much (or how little) to withhold in federal and state income taxes.

The more you claim on your W-4, the less that is withheld in taxes.

Until you file your taxes next year it is hard to tell if they are over or under withholding.

One is fine for now, and if you end up paying into the feds/state, lower your exemption to 0 then.

Go ahead and put 1. The only time that really matters is when you do your taxes. Then you will need to ask your mom if she is claiming you as a dependent. If so, on your taxes you will not claim a dependent. Because you are probably in a low paying job you will likely get your taxes back anyway. By putting 1 instead of 0 they will take a little less out of your check and you will have that money now instead of waiting for it to be refunded.

depending on how much you make during the year will determine if your mother can claim you as a qualifying relative. If you live with your mother all year 365 days and you make under the exemption amount which was 3300 for 2006 not sure for 2007 then she can claim you as a qualifying relative. In order to be a qualifying child you would have to be in school. The W-4 simply means that you will be keeping your money during the year instead of letting the gov. use it if you claim 1

Difficult to answer without more info. Single, zero is the safest irregardless of whether you are a dependent of your mom's or not. That way if you have more than one job or any untaxed income (i.e. bank interest) you have a little buffer (so you should not owe anything).

If you are working a job where you get tips make sure you check with your employer about how they will report at the end of the year (find out what to claim so you don't owe at the end of the year).

You did right, unless you are a full-time student for some part of at least five months of the year. At age 19, your mother can't claim you any more, even if she supports you, unless you are a full-time student.

If you are not going to school, your mother cannot claim you on her taxes. If you claim "1", you will get less federal taxes taken out of each check and get less back on your yearly return. If you claim "0", you will get more federal taxes taken out of each check, but you will get more back on your yearly tax return. Claiming "0" is kinda like a mini savings account. Since you are so young and still at home, I would suggest claiming "0".
