Charcoal is definitely better if you want true barbecue flavour. I would also recommend putting some rosemary cuttings on the fire or grapevine cuttings. Or try some hickory chips, these give a great flavour to meat. If you are going to use a gas barbecue you may as well cook everything in your kitchen and take it outside.

As an Australian I'm a natural expert .... but given the time you probably are too.
There's no doubt charcoal or wood barbecues give a better flavour than gas. However the temperature is harder to control. You have to let it burn down a bit but you can test by throwing a little water on the plate. It should evaporate within between three and five seconds.
The wood or charcoal imparts a smoky flavour that is unique to BBQ's. This is particularly nice if you're doing a good medium/rare steak - which should only be turned once and cooked for between three and four minutes on each side (assuming a reasonably thick steak). You should nver cut or pound the steak. Cover that with a seeded mustard and ... mmmm ... I'm hungry ... seeya

Charcoal provides better taste to food. Propane does not.
I like mixing charcoal and hickory chips [gives out a smokey flavour] when having a BBQ.

I think charcoal is so much better than propane but if you are in a hurry, propane is a good way to go.

I think Charcoal is better, propane is really not much different than cooking on a gas stove, Charcoal gives the B.B.Q that B.B.Q taste.

I add charcoal to my propane and the flavor is delicious. I also add some of those hickory chips. Propane is much more convenient.

Charcoal. But you have to start the fire with out using any of those liquids, and you have to know how to barbecue.

It depends on what you are cooking, but generally yes, and oak fired with mesquite added is even better. But if you don't have a lot of time or you are just throwing on a few burgers, it doesn't make much difference.
