You don't say what country you are in. In the US, you can take a plate with you. Or you can get a temporary plate where you buy the car. If you are an AAA member you can do the title transfer and get a T plate at the AAA office.

Two ways, get to your dmv and ask them for a transportation plate to move it, prove you have insurance and they should give you one for two days or whatever. Other way is to get the title in the mail (overnight it if you must) and go register it the next day. Just make sure you have insurance on it. You could just take it down the highway with a sticker/ piece of paper in the liscence plate that reads (tag applied for)...but always make sure you have insurance and the bill of sale so if you get pulled over you can show them tthat you just bought it. Good luck and hth.

If you bought it from a dealer - it would have to be legal to leave their lot.

Private party - trailer it - or get temporary tags for it

In most states you can drive on the paperwork to get it home. Check with your states laws.
