they are witnesses of His Godship.

He is the Only One Who has the Sovereign Right to rulership.

He is the Originator of all life. He first created a spirit Son. Alongside his Father, Jesus created all the other spirit sons of God, then the physical universe, including any and all life which exists in the universe. We only know of life on this planet at this time.

they are followers of Christ. Christ commanded his followers to preach the good news of the Kingdom in all the earth for a witness to all the nations, concerning what God has purposed to do with all of us, and how He is going to do it - through the Kingship of the One whom God has installed as His choice as King over the earth and mankind; His Son, Jesus Christ.

Jehovah's Witnesses—Who Are They? What Do They Believe?

http://www.watchtower.org/e/jt/index.htm

We Witness to people all over the World that Jehovah is the true God and that his Son is Jesus Christ. I at one time thought they were a cult and believed all these lies about them, until I asked a active Jehovah's Witness and then my eyes were opened to the truth.

The name Jehovah's Witnesses was taken some time ago to identify the only religion that truly follows God.

Isaiah 43:10, 11 says ¨¨You are my witnesses¨ is the utterance of Jehovah, even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and have faith in me, and that you may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none.- I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no savior¨

So it is fitting for people that are following the true God to be named after him.

But just as a rose by any other name smells just as sweet , even if JW's had a different name , they still would be following the true God - Jehovah.

First to be a witness according to Webster's is to: hear, see, or know by personal presence or perception.

i.e witness an accident
witness a signature
witness a wedding

So to be called a Jehovah's Witness is to testify(i.e court case) to what you have learned regarding Jehovah by means of his Word(the bible)

Secondly, we are not a cult. A cult is:a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.

JW's are not extremist by any stretch of the imagination. But because we engage in the societially unorthodox acitivity of public preaching we are mistakenly included in this. We don not live out side conventional society, in fact out places of worship are open to the public as are all of the large conventions we have.

So by the above defination of a cult all christianity is a cult since it was a breakway of Judaism in the 1st century. The Jewish and Roman historians testisfy to the fact that that 1st century christians were looked down on and despised everywhere they went by everyone.

To Kokopelli:

The reason we go door to door is stated at Matthew 28:19,20 in the KJV and any other version you so choose to read. It was a command by Jesus to his diciples that they were to 'go preaching and teaching until the end" We dont do it to get a "ticket on the train to heaven" since the bible clearly states that man was designed to live on earth forever ( Ps 37:10,11)

to the poster:

As in any subject one reseaches, the source material is of great importance. If you question a belief of a JW or anyone else for that matter i suggest you go to them. watchtower.org is where you can get more info on JW's

The original-language words translated "witness" provide insight into the definition of a witness for Jehovah. (Isa. 43:10)

In the Hebrew Scriptures, the noun rendered "witness" (`edh) is derived from a verb (`udh) meaning "return" or "repeat, do again." Regarding the noun (`edh), the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament says: "A WITNESS IS ONE, WHO BY REITERATION, EMPHATICALLY AFFIRMS HIS TESTIMONY. The word [`edh] is at home in the language of the court." A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language for Readers of English adds: "The orig[inal] meaning [of the verb `udh] prob[ably] was ‘HE SAID REPEATEDLY AND FORCEFULLY."

In the Christian Scriptures, the Greek words rendered "witness" (maŕtys) and "bear witness" (mar·ty·réo) also had a legal connotation, although in time they took on a broader meaning. According to the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, "the concept of witness [is used] both in the sense of witness to ascertainable facts and also in that of witness to truths, i.e., the making known and confessing of convictions." SO A WITNESS RELATES FACTS FROM DIRECT PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE, or he proclaims views or truths of which he is convinced.

As one poster mentioned, the name comes from Isaiah 43:10 where God himself called his people Israel his witnesses. He meant that his people were his witnesses. Since Jesus was a Jew, he also was a witness of Jehovah or Yahweh.

Dear Ayoub, Firstly, congrats to you for genuinely seeking the truth, while maintaining your friendship ! FYI, the reason JW's are generally referred to as a Cult, is because they have their own bible. It's called: "The New World Translation" and is only recognised by it's followers & translators: 'The Watchtower Bible & Tract Society'. This is akin to you having your own: 'New World Translation Qur'an' ! A number of scripture verses in their bible have been deliberately mistranslated in order to support their obscure beliefs. I should know, I just happen to have in my possession, an original copy of the first King James Bible printed by Cambridge University Press on behalf of The Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, before they brought out the 'New World Translation'. When I show them this during their visits they are aghast and have even asked to borrow it on occasion, as it contradicts many of their beliefs, but I won't let it out of my sight ! You can imagine their embarrassment when I read from my translation endorsed by their own organization, which contradicts their translation. A simple google search should reveal their false teachings. Blessings !

Jehovah's Witnesses both witness personally and bear witness to others regarding God's personal name, his majestic personality, and Kingdom purposes. In doing so, they align themselves with Jesus Christ and the prophets.

(Isaiah 43:10) “You are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah

(Isaiah 43:12) So you are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “and I am God.

(Hebrews 12:1-2) Because we have so great a cloud of [Jehovah's] witnesses surrounding us, let us also put off every weight and the sin that easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, as we look intently at the Chief Agent and Perfecter of our faith, Jesus

(Revelation 1:5) Jesus Christ, “the Faithful Witness”

Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians who understand the Scriptures to teach that God's Kingdom by Christ Jesus is a real government which will soon replace all earthly governments.
(Daniel 2:44) God of heaven will set up a kingdom... It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite

That Kingdom will rule over the vast majority of mankind, most of whom will have been raised from the dead after Armageddon.
(John 11:23,24) Jesus said to her: “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”
(Acts 24:15) There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Until that resurrection, there is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]
(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades ["hell"] were hurled into the lake of fire

While a limitted number of humans will be resurrected to heaven to share in ruling over mankind, the vast majority (literally more than 99.9%) of Jehovah's Witnesses expect an EARTHLY hope, the same hope given to Adam and Eve.
(Genesis 1:28) God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill THE EARTH and subdue it [caps added]
(Genesis 2:17) You must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die [so never eating from that tree means never dying]

Interestingly, the Scriptures are full of references to this earthly hope.
(Psalms 37:11) 'the meek will possess the earth'
(Proverbs 2:21) 'upright will reside in the earth'
(Isaiah 45:18) 'God formed the earth to be inhabited'
(Matthew 5:5) 'the mild will inherit the earth'
(Revelation 21:3) The tent of God is with mankind
