No its not as far as I know, it is a genetic disorder that can be past down the family line. That is not to say that someone that had no bipolar people in there family can't get bipolar as it holds no boundary's and effects all ages, races, and gender equally. Having someone that already has the disorder in the family does not mean that you will get it for sure just that you are then at higher risk of having bipolar then the general population. It is in no way a developmental disease. take care good luck

Hi Patrick:

No, Bipolar is not a developmental disorder. Bipolar is a mental health illness in the mood disorder catagory that is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain that cause extreme mood swings from extreme happiness to extreme depression that can last for days, weeks, months and even longer in some rare cases.

Here are a few sites that may help you to understand Bipolar a little better:

In essence Bi polar is a mental illness, which manifests itself primarily in extreme shifts in mood. There is more to bi polar than just being a mood disorder while it`s not strictly a psychotic illness, psychosis does form part of at times, as does deluded thinking and behaviour difficulties. Its not just a case of being a moody person that is really personality more than anything else. Having said all that, it is important to keep in mind that bi polar is a form of depression and has to be treated as such. There are certainly various types of depression and this is only one. It is caused mainly by a chemical imbalance, dopamine seretonin just to mention two.

it is a genetic disorder, and can run in whole families, but not everyone is affected. it is considered an organic illness, that responds best to medication. i worked in a large mental health facility for over 30 years, and have met many people that are bi polar. it can run in whole families. we had one family whose mother was bi polar, who had 5 children. out of the five 3, were bi polar. and the mothers mother also was bi polar. usually everyone that is diagnosee with bi polar usually has one family member or more that is bi polar. sometimes people with a bi polar diagnos, may not show symptoms , until later in life, especially if they are under extreme stress.
