Its to protect the eyes. They will in about two weeks. It has nothing to do with light. They couldnt open them if they wanted to.

The puppies' eyes should be open at 10-14 days of age

They usually open their eyes in 10 days to 2 weeks. Some are late bloomers, and go a little longer. Whatever you do, do not try to pry their eyes open, because you can do a lot of damage. They will open when they are ready!

as others have sed, the puppy's eyes are not fully develpoped, and if they did open, there would be every liklihood of being blinded for life. they just arent formed enough to deal with any kind of light, or dust particles for that matter...they are so sensitive after birth that a speck of dust could also cause permanant damage.
and for others who sed they open their eyes? they dont open their eyes for acouple of weeks, they cant open them as they are actually stuck shut. like bunnies and cats, they are stuck closed with something sticky lol i dont know wot it ctually is but it keeps em from accidentally opneing their underdeveloped eyes.

Pup eyes open around 2 weeks, sometimes a bit longer. DO NOT try to force them, let nature take its own time.

God has designed them to open in about 2 weeks as well as teh ears.
It's all part of God's plan.

they are not fully developed, along w/ a kittens eyes. The light will hurt the eyes. and are too sensitive. i forget how long it takes for them to open, but dont worry they will.

the sun or light is to much for them it will burn there cornia and make them blind they know that thats why they close them if its dark theylll open them
