It's always recommended to have a firewall. However, Linux is (literally) 100 times less likely to need one than Windows. Linux has built-in security that far surpasses what Windows has. Hackers and malware tend to target only Windows when it comes to home computers. I have been running Linux and Unix for years and have never needed more protection than what I got with the distribution.

There are games that run only on Linux that you probably haven't heard of before. Some are good. Most are not of the quality of Windows games. It is possible to run Windows software on Linux, including games, but you need to install an emulator. I've read mixed reviews of how well this works. Some games run perfectly, other games are buggy. You have to check it out for each game. Sometimes you have to do a lot of work to get one to run.

Pidgin (used to be Gaim) is a good messenger for Linux. It is compatible with the Yahoo! Messenger service, AOL, MSN, and others, all in one. It also has a lot of features. There is also a version of Yahoo! Messenger for Linux.

Ubuntu is a popular Linux distribution made for the common desktop user. It installs easily and is very well supported. Dell sells computers that use it now.

Many desktop distributions of Linux are as easy to use as Windows. Check out the following Websites:

There are programs to do most things on linux, but not the same ones as windows.

A firewall isnt as needed as it is on windows but I doubt anyone would say NOT to get one.

You can do yahoo messenger stuff but you need to use a linux program such as gaim.

There are very decent games for linux

An easy started linux would probably be redhat. Very windowsy with lots of toys.

I have Ubuntu linux. It is great. It comes with its own very powerful and effective firewall called ip tables. Ubuntu has a package you can install with firewall and A/V.
Gaming absolutely sucks on linux. That is why I had to re install xp. Now I have a dual boot. XP for gaming and linux for EVERYTHING else. Yahoo does have a package for messenger on Linux, but I prefer GAIM. It is a messenger that incorporates a few messaging clients,ie: Aol and yahoo into one easy to use client. Linux is great, but there is a slight learning curve so keep that in mind. Ubuntu is EXTREMELY easy to use.

I prefer SUSE Linux myself. It's easy to use and has a Windows feel to it, which makes it easier to make the transition. It comes on a DVD, so it's packed with software. There are a lot of games that come with it and it comes with a built-in firewall.

Make sure you have antivirus and a firewall. Both are important. Linux is susceptible to viruses, and will be more so as more people start using it. When I first started out on Linux, there were hardly ever any security patches. But, now that more people are using it, it's getting a lot more attention. My last patching process netted me over 100+ security updates I had to do.

From http://www.linux.org/dist/ the distribution categories include the following:

Mainstream/General Public
Security enhanced
Embedded
Minimalist
Red Hat based
Debian based
Runs on MS Windows
Power User
Personal
Slackware based
Mandriva based
Game Console
Live CD
Fedora Core based

I'm guessing you'll want English for the language and Intel compatible for the platform, but have a look around and see.

Linspire used to be called Lindows in part because the interface was similar to Windows, but Microsoft wasn't happy about the name.

Good luck.
