From Letters to a Christian Nation:
“The president of the United States has claimed, on more than one occasion, to be in dialogue with God. If he said that he was talking to God through his hairdryer, this would precipitate a national emergency. I fail to see how the addition of a hairdryer makes the claim more ridiculous or offensive.”
1. What do people here think of people who claim God speaks to them?
2. Would your opinion change dramatically if I said God spoke to me through a toy telephone?

This was a hypothesis I must add.
I'm agnostic/pantheist and do not hear voices.

What If someone said "God spoke to them"?
Well my first question would be: how can you be sure that it was God who spoke to you?
Was it in a dream or a feeling you had in your heart? The Bible says in Matthew 15:19 "For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander." and Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked..." We can't trust our heart - it is not always right and can lead us astray.
Did you hear a disembodied voice or see a ghostly apparition?
The Bible says to test the spirits and see if they are of God and the way you tell is you check what they are saying against what the Bible says, If the voice says something that is contrary to scripture then it's not God.
If it's fully in harmony with scripture then it's possible that it's God because HE will not contradict Himself or His word.
And ... if it's in harmony with the teachings and example of Jesus and the Apostles then it would not tell you to do anything bad and would only tell you something moral and good so there would be nothing to lose in following it.
OF course this world does not want to hear things that are moral and good - so be prepared to be persecuted, Hated and attacked!

1. Psychopathic and or Evil liars.
2. Reminds me of a story I once heard: A bloke told me he was standing behind a door on L Ron Hubbard's boat back in the 60s. Some one said: They won't go for that.
Hubbard responded: Let's see how stupid they really are.
All I can say is that frightened people will believe anything no matter how incredible, unbelievable or just plain stupid.

Grotty Bodkin - I collect quotes - I thought it was good too.
Robert M. Pirsig: When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion.

Are you honestly surprised? Bush is a nutcase! And if God's calling you on a toy phone, maybe you need to back away from the microwave. As for people who generally feel that God is speaking to them (outside of household appliance phenomena), it's no crazier than the other things that come out of modern religion.

that's what the Bible says: Exd 3:2 And the angel of the LORD looked unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush [replaced into] no longer fed on. Well it wasn't a hair dryer actually. It was a telephone and the guy on the other end was that merry prankster Karl (seig heil) Rove.
Since both the caller and listener are delusional the prank worked.

I dont care how people speak to God. I think the proof is in their actions however.
No matter how George Bush speaks to God, I cant see that God would then say "yes, and I want you to go forth and murder thousands of people in the middle east today George. That is my will."
God does not talk to men and give them permission to kill, Jesus Chrsit came to teach love and tollerance...perhaps our mate George was actiing on his own and like other infamous leaders in the world they simply used God as a smokescreen for their evil deeds?
Discuss.

when some people say that god talks to them they mean in their heart or conscience.
so, i wouldn't think anything of that, but if someone told me god was talking to them through their hairdryer or a toy phone i would ask them if they had their medication that day.
it would worry me (although i can't say it would surprise me) to find out that bush was talking to god through a hairdryer.
does god talk to you through your toy phone? they have meds for that now.
edit
i didn't really think that you did...

lol, i like the question.
Well im an agnostic so i do think christianity is a possibility, but being an ex-christian I can say if God does exist and would talk to people he would only talk to the holiest of people, and no offence to Bush, but he isn't the holiest of people.
