Sadly, back in the late 90's, the AW (enlisted Aviation Warfare Systems Operator, Aircrewman) was removed from the S-3B Viking Squadrons... so the ASW capability of the Viking became virtually NIL !!

S-3 NFO's as a whole, could only find a sub if it was on the SURFACE in DAYLIGHT. ASW Detection, Classification, Localization, Tracking, and Attack is an ART that 90% of Pilots/ NFO's never trouble to learn.

There IS no planned Fixed-Wing replacement for the Mid-Outer Zone ASW mission... at least until someone puts a torpedo into one of our ships.

Most likely, the Boeing P-8 MMMA will come out to assist the CVBG for ASW missions

For shipboard use, the only ASW platform will be a helo. The new P-8 from Boeing will replace the P-3 for shore based locations and will cover a large area.

The S-3 hasn't been used in the ASW role for quite a while. It is used primarily as an aerial refueling platform, and was used for ESM, Countertargeting (to launch chaff), and in some surface warfare roles. Helos (SH-60) are now the primary shipboard ASW aircraft.
