I was born and raised in a very rural area. Most of the fellows hated cats, would do horrible things to them and thought of them as targets. Is this more of a rural thing? more of a male thing? Why the outright hatred of cats?

I also live in a rural area and everyone around here hates cats---except me. I have asked them and no one can give me an answer except they are dumb and sneaky. For one thing they are far from dumb and they are sneaky ----they catch mice and whatever else that makes them smarter then men. and men hate that.

It´s just people...Some hate foreigners,some hate people of other religions,some hate fat or skinny people...Some love dogs,some love cats and some hate them!I guess it´s has to do with people´s taste!I personally cannot understand HOW some people can hate such beautiful and amazing animals,but we cannot force them to like them.At least teach them to RISPECT them since they´re still living creatures and therefore shouldn´t be mistreated!I know of a lot of ignorant people who beat cats up or even worse try to kill them just cause the "bother"them.Now that´s what i really cannot stand!

hatred of an animal they do not understand is a type of prejudice, the prejudice you are describing is neither a male thing nor is it a rural thing because it can only be properly categorized as an ignorance thing
I grew up in the rural, then I moved to the city
I found just as many people of both sexes who abused cats everywhere I lived
disliking a certain type of animal as a pet while still respecting that all animals whether you like them or not deserve to not be kicked around or starved is one thing
it's a whole different story when you feel that disliking a certain type of animal as a pet gives you the right to abuse and neglect that animal
I fostered a cat who was 3 years old; she apparently lived at group home for teenagers in the city near-by, when I got her the director at the shelter informed me that the teenage females of the inner city group home thought it was funny to put tampons inside of the cat when she was still a kitten
by the time she was 4 months old she had to have an emergency spay because of an infection from a tampon left inside her for over a week! over the course of the next two years that cat endured two broken bones and many bruises before a neighbor reported the abuse to animal control and she was rescued from that house, when she came to the shelter she was very underweight and guarded about her surroundings. The story has a happy ending though, after leaving my care she was adopted out to a loving family.
so you see, it has nothing to do with your gender or where you're from if you are ignorant enough to believe any creature deserves that kind of treatment:

ps, my kitten turns one Wednesday this week; he can already heal on his leash better than my dog, he knows how to come and sit and jump from place to place (like from one chair to another) all on command, he's learning to play fetch, I started off early with a great book on how to train cats...he is strictly indoors unless he's on his leash with me, and I figured training him would make him better behaved inside the house, I also don't feed him in a bowl, I hide his food around the house and we have fun hunting for it together (better than wild mice)! Regardless of whether you have an ant farm or a dog, you should always be willing to do what is in the best interest of your pet, and if not, then you shouldn't have a pet to begin with

obviously because they are mentally handicaped or with a very small IQ and mental issues. Even if you dislike cats, you know it is extremely wrong to torture and kill them.
