They're very different. West Point trains officers for the US - while the foreign legion takes foreigners as other ranks - all the officers are French.

The legion are among the toughest military outfits in the world, and see quite a bit of action - the French government tends to regard them as expendable. They have very high morale, and most ex-legionaries regard the legion as their family for life - they have their own retirement homes.

To prepare for it, get physically fit and learn some French - both will make the first part of it a lot easier.

West Point is far more academic - the first challenge will be to get in - this will depend on grades - especially in English & Maths. Demonstrated leadership, such as in sporting teams, will also help.

West Point prepares students to be US Army Officers. And along the way you get a college degree. Very top notch stuff. The French Foreign Legion used to be a last chance place for convicts, up to a point. It's most rigorous but the average guy - who is in excellent physical condition and tough in a number of ways - has a chance.

No unit in the French Military including the French Foreign Legion is considered expendable, who ever posted that shite is talking through his ****.

The Modern French Foreign Legion is a highly trained elite force, which just happens to be allowed to recruit from non-French nationals.

At the moment Americans are not flavor of the month in this unit as an American recruit deserted the Legion before finishing his basic training because it was to tough, the prat then wrote a very derogatory book about the Legion full of fantasy and insinuations.

He hopefully is aware that there will be a life-long arrest warrant opened on him and if he lands on French soil faces immediate arrest for desertion.

A good knowledge of French is required as this is the first and for most language of the Legion, with German following a close second, the reason being the Legion traditionally recruits from Germany in large numbers.

You will be signing up for five years and and in that time as in your training you as all recruits will be expected to learn about the history of the Legion and its marching songs.

Physically its very challenging & demanding, its no good crying for the uS to rescue yiu because you made a mistake about joining up, once through the gates you belong to them, your Passport is surrendered and you wont see it till you either fail basic or leave after your enlistment is up.

West Point is for career military guys in the US that are going to be officers.

From what you say I think the Foreign Legion would much more of an adventure, if that is what you are looking for.
