We've had beagles and beagle mixes for many years. Great dogs!!! They are, for the most part, very good with children, keep themselves clean, do not have a strong doggie odor, and have coats that are easy to maintain. They do, however, have a very distinctive bark, which some people find annoying. While rotties can be very sweet, they are also very large!! Beagles generally reach a size of between 13 and 19 inches at the withers, and between 30 and 40 pounds.
I have to agree with Puppy Paws, you need to make your decision based on your own interaction with any particular breed. You also have to take into consideration how much room and exercise you can provide.
You have the next 6 months to do your research and make an educated decision. Good luck!

Boxers ( my fiance has one) are hyperactive dogs and are very loving too. They are hard to keep up with and need a LOT of attention, So if your not home much your probably not going to want to choose a boxer. They also wear out easily and they drink a lot of water because they over tire.
If you do choose boxer, Id do brindle they are prettier dogs.
Rotties ( which I have) I have noticed tend to not be big active dogs, I have run across many that are overweight (like mine) females tend to baloon out quickly if they get fixed. Mine tho is an amazing dog, loving, she sleeps nex to my bed every night and doesnt get up until I get up, no matter what time. Shes a smart dog, she can open her food bag when rolled down, open the refrigerator (which I hate) and she can open the toilet seat. One thing I will say is our fence was broken for 2 months and she never tried to escape. She loves other dogs too.
Both dogs love other dogs, the two love to play together, and the rott is a lap dog (at 125 lbs).
Try looking on backpage.com I dont know if they have hawaii on there but they always have ads for dogs. Or craigs List.

Don't go by what they look like- KNOW THE BREED. Pick which breed is most compatable with your living situation and lifestyle. A beagle was my very first dog that was considered just mine. I loved that dog to death, but in all honesty, a beagle was not the best match for my family. (yes, we still kept him.)
Also, don't believe what people say about rotties being "mean." I have a rottie mix, and she is VERY affectionate.

Beagles are great little, lovable, friendly clowns. Here is a shot of my clown:

Yes, that is my bed.
He loves everyone.
Some people say they bark a lot. I have four dogs and Snoopy is the last one to bark if something is going on. But when he does bark it is a louad hound half bark and bay.
He is a chow hound. I have to watch what he eats to keep him from getting fat. Pretty easy to train, he will do anything for a treat.
Beagles cannot be let out on their own. The have to be on a leash. Their nose rules. If they pick up a sent they like they will follow it to the ends of the world.
All in all, there great little dogs.

Speaking from experience---I have had 3 boxers. And still have one. They are family protective and easy to take care of. They are also very loyal and loving. Beagles are nice yes...if you can put up with their beighing or howling, whatever they do. Rotweillers--well thats another story. Family had a couple and they attacked the kids. If I were you, go with the boxer!!!
