I am a person who thinks he is a borderline alcoholic and have learned of a product that I can take to make an abuser feel very ill if alcohol is introduced into the system. Does anyone know the name of the product and if I need a prescription. Thank you in advance

It's called antabuse. To my knowledge it is a daily prescription and you won't notice much in terms of sensations or side effects. However, if you consume alcohol with the prescription, you will become ill, and I've heard people describe it as 'violently ill'. This can have two different effects. For those who want to quit drinking, it will help them abstain from alcohol. For those who are only halfheartedly quitting it will make them stop taking the prescription. This is because they rationalize that it was the prescription making them ill, rather than the alcohol.

The way this drug was discovered is pretty interesting. The name of the active ingrident is called Disulfiram, and is commonly found in the rubber that tires are made out of. The guys who worked in the tire factories were constantly exposed to the chemical and soon after working there quit going to the bar and quit drinking altogether because they would often become sick after drinking. It was found that this chemical was the reason and they began making it into a prescription.

Bottom line is that if you want to quit drinking, you will be able to with some help of a professional and perhaps this prescription, but I do believe you need a doctor's prescription. If you aren't ready to quit, it's not a miracle drug and you probably won't have any success.

I'm not sure if you mean antabuse or not... but that's not something they hand out lightly, not likely for a 'borderline' alcoholic. What I would suggest, is Campral. It's a newer drug that is supposed to work on the cravings and desires to drink, it's supposed to make you not want to drink. At least, that's how it was described to me anyhow, my mom was given a sample of it, and this is what she told me. I know that she wasnt able to stay on it very long, but she's also a heavier alcoholic... and definitely wouldn't consider herself to be 'borderline.' Good Luck.

If you think you have a problem, go to some AA meetings and listen, speak to others. See if you see yourself in what you hear. Good luck.

Think its called Anabuse, or something similar - certainly its only available from a doctor. Good luck - you are at least acknowedging that you may have a problem which is the first step.
