It is generally not worth it to have a credit card associated with a particular store. It is better to have a Visa or Mastercard and decide to pay off the balance in full each month.
I typically use a single credit card for all purchases. I acquired it because it gave a better rebate for fuel purchases. By putting all my charges on a single card, the graduated rebate scale gives me more money back at higher spending levels than would happen if I used several credit cards to spend the same amount of money.

Store card APR's generally run in the 20%+ area
They are pretty set about their rates and rarely, if ever, reduce them if it is requested.
Unless a person has a 0% interest promo, store cards should "always" be treated as pay in full cards.
Many stores, Macy's included, will at times offer 0% promos
Stores also offer better discounts to card holders that they don't offer to non card holders. .
As for scoring, if all you have are major "credit" cards, having a store "charge" card or two will help.
Store cards are a different "type" of card compared to major credit cards and FICO likes to see a varied mix of different types of credit - credit cards, charge cards, loans, etc.

Stay away from department store CCs unless you have no choice. You should strive to have 2-3 CCs to build your credit but these cards should have low interest rates and no fees. Keep the balances low and pay as much as you can monthly.
