I'm in the process of doing just that. I'm using NeroVision 4, which comes as part of Nero 7.
Unfortunately, it does take quite a while to accomplish the job.
If you don't mind spending a little money, I'd go with the previous suggestion that someone made and use ConvertXtoDVD.

Nero Vision can convert AVI to DVD, but I've had some issues with this program. WinAVI Video Converter does a better job of this task. WinAVI will convert AVI to DVD. Step 1: Please click the "DVD" button on the main interface , or you can click "menu" button on the main interface, then select "Any to DVD" on the submenu of the " format convert " ,and then the program will pop-up a "Select file" box. Then please choose the AVI file that you want to converter. Step 2: Output directory: You can click the "Browse" button to select the output directory. Step 3: Select encoder:You can click it to choose the DVD mode. When it is ready, just click "OK" to start to convert.

The answer is no. You have to convert it to a format that Nero will understand.
You can use a program like WinAvi and there are a few others as well some good but slow, some quick but not so good
Hope this helps

depends on the firware of the dvd player, you can surf the net and look for the firm ware for your make of dvd player, then burn that to disc and just play it in your dvd player to update the firmware of your dvd player then you should not have any problems,if your dvd player will not play the AVI clip

Simply put: no. The avi must be converted before it is put on the disc. You'de probably have to find a converter.
