I have a friend who has just been prescribed a drug that happens to be something a person can get addicted to. I would like to tell her what she should do so that she won't turn out to be addicted to that drug.

Your friend should always follow the prescribed instructions, be aware of potential interactions with other drugs, and never stop or change a dosage regimen without discussing it first with her doctor. She must not use another person's prescription in order to obtain the medication. She should also inform her doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well as dietary and herbal supplements that she uses, in addition to a full description of her complaint, before she tries to obtain any other medications.

The physician should prescribe a minimal number of refills, or should approve every refill, and should closely monitor the patient for signs of problems.

Physicians should always prescribe only after a careful review of patient history and considering other potentially addictive drugs that might be taken--including the illegal ones.

She should make sure her doctor monitors her progress and should withdraw from the medication as soon as she's better.
