Yes, matputzpee is correct about the "camera obscura". It was used to observe solar eclipses and by painters to accurately reproduce scenes.
However, it had nothing to do with photography until the 1700's. The French inventor Niepce is credited with making the world's first photograph in the summer of 1826 or 1827.

I can't remember the exact name, but it was probably George Eastman. If I remember the film company, the name is Kodak, Eastman & Co. & the early form of photography was daguerreotypes.
