You will need a passport for every travel outside the USA.
This site tells you where you need visa:
http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp
If I read it right you do not need a visa for a tourist visit up to 30 days.
You will need a visa for a longer stay or business trip.

The key source for information for US Citizens traveling internationally is the travel.state.gov website. They have Consular Information Sheets with lots of important information concerning each country in the world, including what is required for entry for US citizens.
For South Korea, "A passport is required. U.S. passport holders may enter the Republic of Korea without a visa for a stay of up to 30 days for tourism or transit to another country. When staying for more than 30 days or for any purpose other than tourism or transit, the U.S. passport holder must obtain a visa prior to entry. "
